The Doog story says a lot about how our club was run in those days. When he came to us from the Posh, an old Third Division Club, and us in the top half of the First, the Doog had to take a pay cut.One of the clubs biggest mistakes in the 60’s was letting the Doog go. He was a bloody good striker as he showed for years afterwards at Wolves. Used to live opposite the Anstey Nomads ground where I’d often see him practicing on my way home to Cropston
Gordon Banks was my hero but he did make mistakes including the 63 Cup Final and a couple of England Scotland games. He did lose his England place a few times to the likes of Waiters, Bonetti and Springett but none of them were felt to be as good. Goalies in those days felt it was their job to deal with crosses. Nowadays they tend to leave it to defenders.
