Happy 88th Birthday Davie Gibson

LGFOX

Roofer
One for the oldies. Only caught him in his later years with us but what a player. With Robert Roberts ( always made me laugh as a kid) playing DM, it gave Gibson artistic license to run the midfield. Muzzy was his more modern day equivalent I’d suggest. Would put the ball à la Guppy on a sixpence for whichever CF we had at the time. The doog, Large, Lockhead etc.
We had many v good Scottish players in those days but Gibbo was right up there.

Wonderful. Happy Birthday Gibbo. Bought alongside String the King with astute passes to send him galloping down the left wing. Just completing his National Service stint when we signed him from Hibernian!

I never understood why he didn’t play more games for Scotland. Who was keeping him out of the side?

John White (Spurs) who was tragically killed when struck by lightning on a golf course.
Jim Baxter who was something of a flop when he came down to England with Sunderland and Forest.
Jim McCalliog,Billy Bremner were others.

Yes. Apparently White was called the Ghost as he used to arrive late into the box from seemingly nowhere.
I always thought Bremner was a DM. Baxter was brilliant but as you say Rangers and Scotland realised his alcoholism had taken over by 1968. By that time Gibbo was 30 and it was too late for him.

Alex “The Golden Vision” Young at Everton was another brilliant but “mercurial” Scot who was only capped a mere 8 times by Scotland

Alfie Conn came along a little later in the “seventies” and shone brightly for Spurs only very briefly. Only 2 caps for Scotland. Another “showman” type Scot who would very often sit on the ball to wind up opponents!

Ian King another Scot centre half made a big trio with Mclintock and Appleton. He came whilst l was doing my National Service he was bought as cover for an ageing Jack Froggatt

Peacetime National Service introduced in January 1949
Initially for 18 months but extended to 2 years during the time of the Korean War
Final discharge of National Servicemen in May 1963

A great signing , one of the ice kings
Davie Gibson....oh what a baller to use the modern term. It could have been invented for our Davie. Only slight in build but was never bullied in midfield back in the day but that was probably down to Bobby Roberts who was his minder. Tough as they come was Bobby ,a perfect foil in fact.
Wishing you a very happy birthday Davie if you get to read this.
You gave us a great deal of pleasure watching your silky skills all those years ago, thank you !

I often wonder if the bias against some players playing in England known as Anglo Scots was a factor for some. Frank McLintock only got 9 caps

Gibbo was my all time fav until Vardy came along and it makes you remember that although we have had some dross (and still have) we have also had some exceptional players. I agree with all the good points about Bobby Roberts too.

I will happily pass all messages on

I send all photos to his nephew Steven who sends them onto Davies daughter Kay so she can show him.

He’s down in Devon right now I believe as I caught up with Steven last week in London

I’m sure Davie will love to see all of the nice comments and wishes

I started going to Filbert Street in 1964. Gibbo was an established member of the team then and Bobby Roberts had just arrived to replace McClintock. There were really two good sides in the late sixties, the Doog side and the Frank Large side. Ironically when we replaced Frank with Clarke (for a British record transfer fee) the side was relegated. But Gibbo was a consistently good performer throughout who never let us down. Muzzy would perhaps be the most recent comparison or KDH really skilful players with footballing brains.

Im a year older than Davy but his skills are never a distant memory, please remember this was all on a very difficult pitch with a leather ball that could weigh anything depending on the weather but his skills shone throughout it all a very clever footballer in feet and head.

I never saw him play - I'm only 61! but always read such good things about him that I wish I had.

Message from Davies daughter Kay:

Kay responded with the below.

Oh wow ❤️
Yes 88 on the 23rd Sept….ill pass on your hellos he often asks how you all are and I pass on your messages and photos 😁
If you have the link to the page any chance you can forward???

is there a link you can send for the page?

I’ve sent the link to Steven and he’ll pass on to Kay

I think Davie was a bit harsh on himself when he tried to collect the throw from Gordon Banks that was intercepted by Pat Crerard that led to Denis Law scoring in the 1963 Cup final. Better to recall the nifty bit of play that enabled him to pass to Frank McLintock that led to Ken Keyworth scoring. Even better was scoring in the 64 League Cup Final

Towards the end of his Lester career would come on at half time and show all his ball skills..unforgetab;le
I too can remember him coming out at half time and he spent the hole 10-15 minutes on his own doing keepy uppies in the centre circle and the ball never once touched the ground. He had more applause than the match did... we had never witnessed any thing like it !
Bloody brilliant Davie 👏

My dads all time favourite. Not entirely sure how it happened, but when my dad managed our newly formed junior football team in Barwell Davie coached us.
My dad seemed to know more about Davie than his daughter Kay who I went to school with.
Happy Birthday fella!.

TC, it’s Kay who passes all the messages to Davie that I send to Steven.

I Saw Davie play in his last full season at Leicester, he linked up so well with Stringy with his brilliant passing. O'Farrell moved him and Andy Lochead on to Villa in 1970 and he helped them re build after relegation to division 3. National service gave him the toughness to go with his silky skills to make him one of our best players of that era, they don't make them like that anymore.
