Martha Reeves

Martha Reeves performed in Hinckley during the 1980’s Soul Scene era, with occasional “overflow” events hosted at the former Regent Club on Rugby Road when nearby primary venues like the Leisure Centre were unavailable.
During the late 1970’s and 1980’s, Hinckley had a vibrant Northern Soul and Motown scene centred around local all-nighters. While major international visiting acts like Martha Reeves, Edwin Starr and Junior Walker played the big stage at the Hinckley Leisure Centre down the road, events and overflow sessions occasionally spilled over to the Regent Club.
Legendary soul artist Martha Reeves made notable touring appearances in the area during this active period in the early-to mid-1980’s.
I was there and saw Martha Reeves when she sang at the Regent Club. She was wonderful!

……also saw Martha Reeves and the Vandellas on stage at The Swan Pub in Yardley. At the time it boasted the longest bar in Europe as well as eight other bars and 2 dance halls on multi floors. It was owned and run by Ansells Brewery. Wainfleet used to run coaches to it for nights out on Saturday nights. It eventually closed as a night club and given over to office space. The building is still there and you can see it as you go through the underpass on the A45,Coventry Road, towards Birmingham city centre. The area is very run down nowadays!

For a short period around that time the Regent Club had striptease artistes on show at Sunday lunchtimes. To the best of my knowledge neither Martha Reeves or any of the Vandellas were involved in any way in such sordid entertainment!
Then came the notorious Striptease event one evening at the Willie Thorne Snooker Club and Bar on Castle Street. At the height of the “proceedings thereof” plain clothes police officers had to spring up in the audience to intervene and stop the very lewd and allegedly illegal sexual activities being “cavorted” on stage. One well known local man was arrested but subsequently acquitted of any offences at the later Court trial. So shocking and sordid were the events on stage that evening that it made front page headlines in the Sun newspaper!
