Mickey Mouse Degrees

Interesting subject. I work with two lads, who went to Uni. They studied leisure and tourism and some other sport related bull. Ones a brickie,( the dimmer one), ones a chippy. Many of their degrees deliver little in the real world. Recently, I listened to a debate asking why study must culminate in a job. Whats wrong with learning for learnings sake? More impractical nonsense.

Which bits of social science would you retain? Or do you mean carry on with the full range, but have fewer universities offering them and fewer students doing them?

Leisure and tourism should have been a very useful degree in today's working world. Still at least they managed to get useful jobs, perhaps it was because they showed an ability to work through an academic degree to the end and increase their knowledge that they got the jobs. So many youth have no job at all. Of course they may simply have been thick buggers looking for a year of doing nothing before they quit.

I think you are starting to understand. Thousands of kids see three years on the lash, in university, as a right. The lads arent the brightest, therefore should never have been in University, but in technical colledge, learning something that is actually useful to them.

Care to tell me what post their leisure and tourism degrees should have secured for them in todays working world?

It is a right, why shouldn't it be?

University isn't for everyone, there are some excellent apprenticeships around, there needs to be more.

Really?

The tourism industry in the UK alone employs around 4m people, 12% of employment and the leisure industry around 2.7m so around 10 %. It's worth around £300 billion.

To list all the jobs would be ludicrous, do a quick search.

They could've gone to technical college. It was their choice. Don't you think people should have choice? Do you think we should designate people to go to uni or college or directly to work?

They've got themselves jobs, not "sponging" off the state, so does it really matter?
