Tourist tax

Prof

Happy Clapper or Moaning Ungrateful

We've had this (or similar) in France for a long time. It's a small tax (a bit of a pain in the ass for small B&Bs) and I think it's reasonable. I like that the local council decide how it should be spent. I don't know about England but over here more tourists are using a resort's facilities without putting as much as they used to into the local economy. They go to "parks" where all the food and attractions are included and then use the beaches or forests as play areas and litter deposits.

In York there are more and more short let rentals (Airbnb etc) which means that a lot of visitors will pay rent to the owner (not necessarily a local person, and certainly not offering rooms in their own home) but can minimise local spending by self-catering, especially if they are in a city centre location. Doesn't put much into the hospitality sector of the local economy and exacerbates the 'hollowing out' of the city centre.

The Government say they don’t expect this to exceed 5% of the cost, although this is at the discretion of the LA.
Council Tax annual increases are supposed to be capped at less than 5% but there are 7 authorities who have had higher rises, a couple by 9%

How long before the ‘tourist tax’ follows a similar trajectory, particularly as elected members will see this as a way of raising income without directly impacting their voters

It seems to have been forgotten that tourists spend money in the local economy

Less and less in many "tourist" areas maybe not London and the likes but definitely seaside resorts.

So why call it a tourist tax then?
What do you want us to call it?

I guess people use "tourist tax" because by far the largest percentage of those that will pay it will be tourists (in some form or other).

Just call it accommodation tax, a lot of businesses pay for their staff to stay overnight rather than travel home tired, hotels near airports are frequently used by airlines it’s just another tax

If I negotiate and agree with you would we be coming to an accommodation and would we then have to pay tax?

It was labelled a tourist tax in the article, so that's what I used. I didn't realise it would be so disconcerting for some roofers.

But France, Spain etc only pay 10% VAT so swings and roundabouts.

I don't see the big deal myself. We have to pay this in many European countries we visit. It's for the local community, who have to put up with the increased impact on roads, refuse collection etc. It's likely to be a 5% levy so if you're spending £2000 is another £100 going to stop you going?

What about the bloke working away from home paying for digs, or the football fan having a night out after a game?

It doesn’t just apply to holidays and just because it’s done in Europe doesn’t make it anything other than just another stealth tax

On its own, it isn't a big deal - it's the cumulative effect of pretty much everything costing more, and this just adds to that.

Someday there'll be a final straw

Fred's shithole in Skeggy will charge it but John's shithole in Chapel won't, 6 nights of paying it is a lot of beer money - not rocket science

If he's working away from home then he it should be his company paying for "digs". A dig tax? People going for the footy are using the local amenities so should pay for them. If they're stupid enough to be paying for the fuel a little extra won't change much. If it's not worth it. Don't go. Tax is tax calling it a stealth tax is just stupid.

If you want people to collect and dispose of your rubbish, if you want people to provide public toilets, if you want people to maintain roads for travel etc... you have to pay taxes. If you don't want to pay then "revolution" or believe "reform" and go back a couple of hundered years or more for amenities.

Don't understand this at all. Is this another Hugh irrelevance not based on anything other than his own gut feeling?

You'd be lucky to get 1 beer for the price of one night's "accommodation tax" What century are you from?

What if "he's" elf employed? Anything that gets paid in tax does not get spent in the local economy

This is on top of the taxes we already pay for people to collect and dispose of our rubbish, provide public toilets, and maintain roads for travel, etc...

How many times do we have to pay for these services?
