Are Man. City fans proud of their club?

...'cos they shouldn't be. In fact there is a powerful argument that they should be ashamed. They are apparently on the verge of acquiring the world's most sought after player (because they can) and might (God save us) be on course to achieve what the media slavishly refer to as an "historic quadruple". Their playing squad is already the most expensive in the country, possibly in the world and all this has been financed by a ruling member of a country with one of the world's worst human rights records. This is a situation that the toothless football authorities at home and abroad have proved to be powerless or unwilling to prevent.

I don't personally know any of their fans. I used to know one, but that was quite a few years ago when they had only just been promoted from the old Third Division. I often wonder what he makes of them now, following their big 'lottery win' in 2008. I just hope that at least some of their older fans, from the Bell, Lee, Summerbee era feel a tad uneasy that their club can outbid just about any other club in the world (with the possible exception of PSG) for any player they set their sights on.

Also, although they are clearly a wonderfully talented bunch who are often a joy to watch, there is a cynical edge to their game which rarely gets reported on and frequently goes unpunished by match officials. The word 'arrogant' springs to mind when describing both their play and the attitude of their manager.

Here, Rodgers has made it clear that he is trying to achieve success in quite a different way by improving the players he has, including the Academy products and continuing the club's recent record of shrewd recruitment. Moreover, with the support of generous but non-interfering owners and his team of back room staff, he has used his communication skills to reach out to the fans and make them feel part of it all in a way that few other managers have managed to sustain in recent years. In short, Leicester City is a club and a team we can be proud of. And I know I am biased but I suspect the majority of other clubs' fans admire us rather more than Manchester City.

Most of their fans, I assume, will dismiss all this as green envy. Pity.

I like Man City fans always seem proper to me.

think we have a honourary Roofer Man City fan on here- Nomadix?

As a reader of football forums, the City fans on Bluemoon are vile shitehawks. Im sure most arent. I dont know where they get their persecution complex from.

Got a mate who is a Man City, has lived down here for many years and still has a season ticket
He's the one who normally organises the invasion of Aylestone when we play them at home (gets a few coaches down there)
Great bloke similar age to a lot of us on here, knows how lucky they are to get the backing they have had.
Like Mac says proper fans better than the other Mancs!

They always used to be decent fans but the last time I went up there for a game the guys at the table in the pub next to me were so up themselves and dismisssive of every other team and player they discussed to the point of embarrassment. They had totally forgotten their roots and what their club was about. This prompted my comment on another thread that if we get a period of sustained success that I hope we don’t follow the same path.

Also that godawful song about us sacking Ranieri the year after we won the league when they did exactly the same to Mancini. They have very short memories.

In many ways I admire them. You take the train from London to Man U or Liverpool and it’s packed with tourists, often standing room only. It’s not at all packed for a trip to Man City, just a few London based fans.

Their stadium is now about the right size for them now. As a home fan I know it’s relatively easy to get tickets for most games.

Their transfer record paid is also much lower than other big 6 clubs however it seems this is about to change. All their spend is by stealth, they spend a hell of a lot of money but they’ll spread 200 million across 4 or 5 players. I also still believe they got Mahrez on the cheap.

They certainly got a kick up the arse last season when Liverpool won at a canter and they are taking steps to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

Yet I feel the whole thing about Man City has changed and is continuing to change, for the worse. They have that win at all costs mentality with their little fouls all over the park which has been mentioned a number of times, also their blatant disregard of financial fair play and next to no punishment for doing so. They don’t need to do that but I guess they just have that philosophy from the top down.

Never minded Man City.

The banana republic stuff was funny.

A club that had ups and downs , with a more successful neighbour.

Were in the third tier not so long ago and now with good ownership; find themselves among the elite.

Sound familiar?

They stole £60m off us, by cheating last season though.

i know a handful of die hard man city fans, and though they'd never admit it i've seen them lose a 'something'.

fire, desire, passion, whatever you want to call it that keeps us going and hoping....i think it's all got a bit too easy for them, and the sense of achievement isn't there anymore, or at least it isn't anything like as satisfying for them anymore.

Personally, as the PR arm of a vile & corrupt regime I should despise them & everything they stand for.
However ,as I don't have to bump into any plastic touristy fans a la Manu & Liverpool at work, that overrides my principles & I want them to win anything we can't.

I agree with most of the sentiments expressed here. The money Man City have is part of a wave that has been damaging the game for 25 years, but I'm in my late 40's and the media driven, publicity hungry commercialisation of football has never sat well with me. I always had a soft spot for Man City, partly because they used to be good but were pretty rubbish by the 80's and 90's and also because they weren't Man Utd. I found the whole 'noisy neighbours' thing quite amusing and was pleased to see them knock United off the top spot. But I quickly tired of it once the novelty wore off. I now find the way they play extremely tiresome and dull, the niggling fouls and whining puts them up with the worst excesses of any other club and Pep Guardiola is nauseating. His personality will cloud a lot of the current thinking because of his apparent arrogance.

But on the other hand, the changes that make me uncomfortable have also heralded improvements that I don't always acknowledge. Much as I loved standing on the Kop in a crowd of 12,000 in the early 90's would I want to go back to those days? We are a club that also won the 'lottery'. We didn't win a Euromillions rollover like Man City, more like third prize in the Postcode Lottery, but we're on a similar trajectory. Some of our newer fans will lack the grounding that the older generations do. With Man City I'm sure there are tens of thousands of older fans that enjoy the success but not as much as they would have done if they had built a team of youngsters to do it. Unfortunately we don't hear from those, it will be the fans in their teens and twenties who know nothing but relentless success.

So I don't like them, as much as I used to. I'm not quite at the point yet where I'd want Liverpool or Man Utd to beat them, but it's close. Pep Guardiola is an obnoxious individual, but hugely successful in those big clubs. I just find it frustrating that they have all that money, all of those players but still act as if they are a small, victimised club. They don't play exhilirating football, they don't need to foul, to whine and to cheat. But they do.

Yes they’ve ‘bought’ the league again this season but what I will say is generally they buy well. De Bruyne, Silva ( both) , Aguero, Kompany, Sterling etc were ‘bargains’ in theory. Yes they’ve made some cockups but they don’t buy like their neighbours who make some £30-50m buys which are awful value plus the ex defender of ours who though good isn’t £80m worth by a mile.
What’s sad with these clubs is they can buy themselves out of a problem, the Diaz scenario this season after after 5-2 being a prime example. Also they’ll have a fantastic expensive academy but Foden is the only one to come out of it.

Spot on. I have read a fair bit on that forum and we have taken a right bashing at times. Someone pointed out about forgetting where they have come from. I think their older fans are more genuine, but the younger ones have known nothing different, and have s sense of entitlement, and are extremely patronising considering other clubs are not competing on an even basis with them.

As a regular of Old Aylestone Social club are you referring to that invasion?
If so it's amazing that they cram about 10 coaches onto the car park.
Their visit was always a boost for the club. A committee person told me they come in for an hour or so, stand several deep at the bar and go for it.
Always been good natured, and when told no more drinks, they always left with good banter and appreciative that the bar staff worked their arses off to accommodate them.
The club managed to take about £4k for their brief visit.
A success for both parties, which was replicated whenever they played at Leicester.

Yes thats them,my mate lives just the road so it's on his doorstep and he tries to makes sure that those that turn up are decent fans, like you say its a good day for the club and the for the takeaways as well

Playing devil's advocate, what if we found ourselves in the same position in a few years' time?

Imagine a scenario where a very rich Arab Sheikh offered a crazy sum of money to Top to sell the club to him, & then we started to see Man City-levels of investment & eventually success, & all the good & the bad (as already described) that comes with it.

Would you stop being proud of the club? Stop supporting? Move your support to a more local, lower league club?

Or would you say as a Man City fan I know says, "I've been thru' the shit times - the fans deserve this!".

I'm sure they will not have been as proud of thier club when they won the title as we were ours. As for Daz, you've got to be on a wind-up.

£4000 fron 10 coaches?

£400 per coach, so about 8 quid per person.

They need to either get more bar staff or put the prices up. Should be taking three times that.

Wardeys club (OASC), I was virtually brought up in there. I still used to go in pre-match when my old man was alive as he wouldn't go anywhere else. He was number 1, before he died. And my grandad before him, he was number 1 for ages.

They tend to spread out, & take in the other local pubs.
The Black horse always used to do breakfasts, & the chippy opened specially

What a misguided comment.
Are you familiar with O.A.S.C ?

It's a club. Approximately 3 pints in an hour per person were served . Fantastic considering the numbers wanting to be served. How many times do you go to a bar when there is probably 200 people wanting to be served at the same time? Believe me that's not a normal situation. The bar in the club is relatively small, so any more than about 6 bar staff wouldn't work. The numbers you quote are not realistic.

It's possible our paths have crossed. My Mother's Uncle was also no 1 for a while. And I believe his brother was there when it began in 1953.

Would have to disagree. It is about the money. He has spent 421 million on the defence in transfer fees without even thinking about the associated wages.

Mistryman has it about right.
If we found the Thais' business was a front for the world's biggest drug cartel would we as fans tear up our tickets? Some would but in the end we have no control on who buys our(?) club because it ceased to be our club lifetimes ago.
Yes, ManC have played the market but it is a market allowed/encouraged by the FIFA and FA.
It mirrors free market capitalism which was never designed to benefit the little chap. That is the way of the world and pro football, so you can't have it both ways. Some principled ManU fans rejected it and formed a club more independent from this madhouse.
One day perhaps sanity will again rule and limits imposed on a worldwide scale, but once you allowed investers in who use the game for theitr different interests then who is going to reverse the trend?

Of course, but it is where it comes from, what its real purpose is and how it is controlled which is the issue.
I forgot to say that I am proud of Leieseter Cty because we won the title depite the rigged sysem, not because of it.

Sadly I still see some people walking around Leicestershire wearing other teams colours, usually Manure or Liverpool. However despite all their success I can't recall seeing anybody wearing Man City attire. Pleasing but very strange

I thought the same! Same with Chelsea.
