So for the last 21 days we’ve toured Northern Scotland in our new motorhome enjoying the incredible sights of the North Coast 500 route amongst other things.
Today we find ourselves in Fort William finally on our way south. One of my personal joys on this trip is we passed so many towns and grounds of those Scottish teams we all know but have no idea where they are!
So Fort William. Now being the 2nd biggest town in the Highlands after Inverness you’d think they’d be a powerhouse up here. But no. From what I can work out they’re no more. They’ve been a mess for years. Look at this:
On 31 July 2019, Fort William won their first competitive match in 707 days when they defeated Nairn County 5–2 in a North of Scotland Cup tie, ending a 69-game run without a victory.[21] This win came one day after BBC Scotland broadcast The Fort, a documentary on the club's winless run. After another winless month, Fort William finally recorded their first league win in 882 days on 11 September, with a 1–0 home win against Clachnacuddin.
I’ve spotted many grounds on our trip including starting with Falkirk, the 2 Dundees, Arbroath ( closest ground in the UK to the sea?) before going through Brechin and heading north. Forfar, Brechin, Arbroath and Montrose all being no more than 10 miles from each other. All ‘Angus’ derbies!
We passed Inverness Caledonian Thistle’s ground, quite cute on the side of the main road as we ventured further north to Dornoch. ( for the attention of Soho, these are places that even your norven monkey friends haven’t even dreamt of going to).
We then went up the east coast passing the quaint Brora Rangers ground with an impressive 4000 capacity. It’s basically a village! I noted their next game was a local derby against their northern neighbours Wick Academy. I’d loved to have gone but our journey didn’t accommodate the match.
On our way into the beautiful town of Wick with the shortest street in the WORLD! we passed Harmsworth Park, their ground. Lovely little place.
Interestingly the football grounds started to peter out as we gathered pace across the far north coast and gradually down the east coast on the way to Skye. The main game in these places seems to be shinty with pitches everywhere.
On Wednesday we start the long journey south passing Glasgow as we drive to the border. I might make make a slight detour to pass East Glasgow in the hope that TCR is crossing the road as I trundle down at 50mph in a 3500kg vehicle. It’s been a super trip and that would be the icing on the cake!!
It’s been memorable
