Banks and Shilton

By some margin these were the best two keepers we have had in living memory. Both of them commanded the goal area with considerable authority and could not be intimidated even by the likes of Bobby Smith or Roger Hunt. One of them is still around and even at the age of 70+ could still do a better job than Stowell.

Agreed but who was better? Both played for us for about 7 years. Both became England No 1 during that time and both were truly world class.
Apart from the Maradona goal, Shilton was probably stronger on dealing with crosses but Banks was more agile, Shilton maybe becoming a little muscle bound.
As the poet said, comparisons are odious. Just grateful we had two such greats.

Shilts tended to punch crosses whilst Banksy held every thing

Would Banks and Shilton have come for crosses if they had nobody behind them .I think not ? Different game back then with players on both posts and the centre half standing on the line.

My own opinion was that Banks was better for England & Shilts was better for Leicester. A long time ago but they were both fantastic, much better than anything we have now

Don’t think my late Dad ever got over Gordon Banks rare off day in this game he often mentioned it along with the double going up in smoke....☹️. He played well in the semi final though against Liverpool apparently
He certainly did.

Shilts didn't have many bad games for England but he made a couple of high profile mistakes - Poland 73 and W. Germany 90 - whereas Banks is revered for the Pele save. Actually though, Banks benefitted from a really tight England defence in front of him and rarely had to make as many "Hollywood" saves as Shilton did. You don't see them on You Tube anyway, just the Pele save. He made many spectacular saves for Leicester though but they are not on film.
