Biggest betting sickener

I had been backing Harchibald for the 2005 Champion Hurdle since before the previous Xmas.
When it won at Kempton on Boxing day( I was there) I continued to have the odd couple of quid on.
I believe that after Xmas it was ante post fav' ,however a doubt in the run up to the race meant it started around 7/1 if memory serves me correct.

Halfway up the hill, cantering on the bridle , I still sometimes think it's going to win.

Too many to list but one stand out was Ten Plus in the Gold Cup 1989. I had backed him all season ante post and had about 150 quid going on him. The ground was bottomless and he was cruising when he misjudged the third-last fence and taken a fall that was to end his life. His near-hind leg was fractured, sadly he was still running at the end, He was laughing as he passed Dessert Orchid with a lap to go, he would have won, absolutely no doubt in fact he would have been a superstar.

Could mention many and more over the years.....Ile de Chypre in the Cambridgeshire sticks in my mind. We`d backed it at all prices, the couple of weeks before the race, down to 7/1 on the day.Almost landed a small fortune.
Adjal,in the guineas. Had a ton on it that day.A decent bet for me in those days.At least he got my money back in the July cup.
Ten Plus was a sickener....would`ve pissed it that day ..

I was at Cheltenham that day, any other meeting it would have been abandoned, snowed like fuck.
Loads of big price winners that day, Ikdam in the triumph 66/1 and Observer Corps also 66/1, the placepot paid 22000 which was a record then I believe. There was a good few of us there for all 3 days and on the Thursday not one of us backed a winner.

Harchibald had tons of class but had to be put in front virtually on the line or he would chuck it in

Our bus got stuck up Cleve Hill. I had one winner Willsford. The following year it was rock hard ground, we walked the course which you could back then, there was 9 horses killed that year. Norton Coin won The Gold Cup at 100/1, finished 2nd the previous year to Observer Corps

Back in the day when I worked an eight hour night shift my routine was finish at 7am, papers on the way home, go through the horses, bed at 8am. Up at 12, down the bookies til 5pm then back home for a few hours kip then I work for 11pm.
I’d meet a mate of mine in the bookies and we’d spend the afternoon betting and smoking weed.
This one afternoon my mate had put a £5 treble on. The first two had come in and he was waiting on a frankie horse to come in in one of the last races to complete his treble. He’d took even money but the horse had come in to 4/7. To say he was confident was an understatement.
Anyone and everyone who came in the bookies he would announce his bet and show them his slip.
Race time, all the horses in the stalls. The stalls open, frankies horse takes one step, goes down in his knees and frankie goes over the handlebars, dumped on his arse, still holding the horses reigns with half the horse still in the stalls.
Deathly silence, I looked at my mate beside me, he was looking at me with a puzzled look on his face and says “what happens now?”
Now I don’t know whether it was the drugs but I just burst out laughing and continued to laugh for the next half hour. Every time I tried to speak to him I just pissed myself again.
This went on until one of the girls behind the counter asked us to leave.

I don't bet that much, usually just a couple of quid on footie accas.

Had a fiver on an 8-way acca last june, payout £900 or so. Had 7 come in, just had to watch Man Utd beat Norwich in the FA Cup. Man Utd went one up just after half time. Cashout was up to £800. Then fucking Cantwell scores....

Here's a killer of a footy Acca. My brother does them all the time, but he don't piss about on piddly bets. He'll bet £40 -£50 a time, usually 5 or so games. Both teams to score in both halves and a winner.
Start of this season he's done a fiver timer. First two come in, the third game was into the second half. Both teams had scored in the first half, the team he picked to win was leading 3-1 in the second half. All he needed was the other team to score. It went 4-1 but still no gosl from the other team, they goes close a couple of times towards the end but still couldn't get the goal he needed. End of bet. (Think it was a Spanish or Italian game)
My wife was laughing coz he was pacing up and down and throwing a few curses in.
The following Saturday the other two games play out. (Prem games) both come in.
Payout would have been 1.4 million...

VAR Killed football betting at the top table, I don't bet on any VAR matches

I'd be crying.

Still a result one way or another. Don't see how it makes a difference, but then I'm not a serious punter.
He has mentioned it once or twice 😂😂 it would have been a lot worse I guess, if the game that let him down was the last but the other side of the coin he would have had a decent cash out to think about.

The day before we were in shirtsleeves it was a lovely March day, it was also in the days before the crowds got so bad you couldn’t move about or get to the bar, I prefer the “ gaff” tracks now.

Leicester v Birmingham FA Cup, last combined first goalscorer & correct score bet I ever placed. Always placed bets for me & 2 mates. Wrote on the slip "Frank Sinclair to score first, Leicester win 4-2" and stood in the queue. Kept looking at it and just thought "what am I thinking", turned round, scrubbed it and put "Matt Elliott to score first, Leicester win 4-2". Of course Frank goes and scores first and Brum make it 4-2 in the last minute. I was screaming for anybody to score in Injury time. My mates never let me forget it. (And to really rub it in the programme for the rest of the season had Ladbrokes adverts for "If you had placed £x on Frank Sinclair to score first & Leicester to win 4-2 you would have won £1200"... which is pretty much the bet I was placing.)

3 years ago I had 17 on a 19 game accumulator. One of the 2 that missed was down to a last minute equaliser. Thankfully the other was waaay out otherwise that would have been a bit of a sickener.

1991 was my last Cheltenham and went in Fosters Enclosure pay on the gate £5 because The Club which we'd been in for the past 3 years was £30 and a rip off, you could hardly get a bet on. The next year it became all ticket Club was £50 and the Fosters Enclosure was £20 so I packed it in.

My last one was 1998 £70 to get in and a fight to get to the bar, funnily enough I made a good profit that week!

I've been Cheltenham for the last 30 years can't remember one horse.Always on the Wednesday Queen Mother. On the piss from 7.00am from Narborough, full English in Cheltenham next to station then the bus to the race course. Always in the club its definitely better since they built the new bogs. Ive also been Aintree,Haydock Park and Newmarket still can't remember one horse, still great days though ...😂

I've been to Warwick, Leicester, Southwell, Wolves, Huntington, Cheltenham, Newmarket (RM), Towcester, Leicester, Uttoxeter, Stratford, York and finally Teeside Park, not to see any racing, it had shut down but we sneaked in and 'had a look round' :)

Sounds about right, Queen Mother on the piss. So you are saying that you can't remember Moscow Flyer, Viking Flagship, Master Minded etc etc, don't believe you.

I've been to Warwick Leicester, Huntingdon, Market Rasen, Alley Pally Ascot, Newbury, Fontwell, Salisbury, York
Doncaster, Plumpton, York, Newmarket Aintree Southwell and others
Worst tracks for me Cheltenham could hardly see bugger all go for a slash or eat and drink,. best best for me was on the gambling front as Plumpton

Are you sure that Nick Dundee race wasn't at Cheltenham? I can remember him going down like a ton of bricks at the last in the Sun Alliance, everyone thought he'd been killed, Looks Like Trouble won by miles
