I thought Maddison would get in the squad.
Gives him a break and will be fresh for us in August.
Southgate said he is very happy with who he has picked in midfield

Southgate obviously doesn't like Maddison, since on form he clearly should be picked. JJ hasn't quite picked up his form from pre-injury, but if he gets there he's right up there.
 
As auto pick Kane spends most of his time dropping deep maybe no room for a number ten in Southgates eyes

There can be no clear footballing reason for not picking him, he's quite clearly been the best English midfielder throughout 2022. The nonsense argument he's put up saying he's up for the same position as Mount, Foden etc holds zero weight as clearly Maddison's strengths lie in receiving the ball in tight areas, making a yard of space and delivering a telling pass, something neither of the compared players do.

Unquestionably it's a feeling Southgate has that he doesn't warm to JM as a personality within a squad set up.

Likely a personality thing. Also the vast majority of his goals and assists have been against the 3 relegated clubs and Southampton. Hardly the calibre of teams England will be facing in the Nations League.

Most definitely a personal issue, he's in the same mould as that cunt Hoddle.

Spiteful grudge holders both of them, although Hoddle tries to use god to mask it.
 
I am disappointed for Maddison, but pleased for LCFC - he gets a decent break to re-charge.

I do think it’s also because Southgate probably wants to play 3-4-3, and a no 10 doesn’t fit in to that
 
I'm not buying the "no. 10" argument. Maddison has been been playing wide right as often as not.

It's purely that Southgate loves his nice safe bcc picks, preferably those that have followed "the pathway" thru u18s and u21s. Don't forget he never picked grealish until he moved.

It's nothing to do with that Dag's in Maddison's case... he straight up doesn't like him I believe. Or maybe the team is picked from higher up the chain ? Any sane human being would have taken him, even if only to bring on to give you something different.

"Back in the day" (I mean when you've been going long enough to start realising how it all works but before most of the hope has been beaten out of you - so eighties for me) I got to the point of being dismayed anytime any LCFC player was linked with an international call up as it was almost always a precursor (not that there were many) to "I need to move to a bigger club", a signal to the names to come and get 'em & one that felt actively encouraged by International managers with occasional call ups & hints of close run things to those outside the 'bigger' clubs. Kind of feels similar now though Phillips managed to avoid a move to a big club [Leeds fans you can thank me later for that] last year prior to his injury. There's that hint of willingness to look outside of the bubble but ultimately Southgate is just talent spotting for the PL's biggest names.

Congrats to JJ, got to say I am surprised based on performances since he's returned but hopefully a confidence boost (though hopefully not one that turns his head). Sorry for Maddison though despite the goals & occasional brilliance it felt like a disjointed season with the random number generator picking players & positions for most of the season (whether enforced or not). Really hope he sees the immediate future at Leicester as he still feels like a differentiator.
