English Seaside Towns

(y)

Of course anyone who knows the place will know that the left side (west) is the nicer side.

Against all common sense of course, but that is how it is.
I've lived in Westbourne, Kinson, Redhill, Charminster (briefly) and Pokesdown. The residents of Southbourne may argue with you.

England's best seaside town

Good beach, scenic coastal footpaths, small harbour, plenty of proper old fashioned boozers, Homely B&B's, Fish n chips in beef dripping, lack of chain stores/pubs.

Had many family holidays in Bournemouth. Always stopped in hotels at the West Cliff end.
Had a good few hours in the Royal Exeter, the Wessex, and past the Chines at the Studland Dene at the top of the cliff.
We also had a beach hut up that end and watched Max Bygraves walking by with I presume his grandkids.
Back in the early 80's a trip to Tuctonia was heaven sent for the amusement arcade games. Also a trip to Hengistbury Head was memorable for 18 holes of pitch and putt.
AFC do any of those things exist anymore?

It is quite strange, but as a resident, rather than a visitor, you look at different things. Still plenty of hotels in the Westcliff area and the Royal Exeter is something of a land mark. Don't really know the others though.

If we had the chance we would move to the top end of Alum Chine, lovely walk through the chine to the beach just a few hundred yards in the other direction to the bars of Westbourne.

Walked through there many times, very nice.

We just missed a property at the top end of the chine, an elevated, decked terrace backing right into the trees, would have been rather nice as it had its own gate to access the chine.

Walk the other way and it is less than 10 minutes to the bars in Westbourne.

AFC if you Google Studland Dene Hotel, you will see what a lovely old building it was. Looks like it's been replaced and is now The Studland Dene Holiday Apartments.
The hotel was on the corner near the top of the cliff on Alumhurst Road. We used to have a beach hut close to there. After a morning at the beach, it was a trip up the hill for lunch and a very welcome lager shandy. Then back to the beach for the afternoon. Happy days.

Indeed, we used to do similar in around 1960 or so. We were usually in the West Cliff area too, can not remember many details but the zig zag path up the cliffs and the Furnicular railway/lift stick strongly in the memory.

These days we often use the car park where Alumhurst Road meets the bottom of Alum Chine, free in the winter months and still very nice on a bright day. Prior to lockdown our usual routine would be to get the bus from Poole to Westbourne late afternoon, walk down through the chine, along the beach for a while then, back up the chine to Westbourne for 'happy hour' in the Camden Bar then some food before heading home on the bus. Simple pleasures.
