I used to work there - Thorne Lighting

I remember going to see their Christmas Lights on the building a bit north of Humberstone Heights when I was a nipper (y)

One of my mates sent me this photo last week. He found it in his garage ad reckons he must have nicked it off a machine when he was doing his apprenticeship at the BU.

I used to work on Pinfold Road and play pool for the Golfie back in the day, the Christmas lights really were amazing it was a real landmark

I worked there 1970-74 in I.T. It was the only place I worked where the goods sold in the staff shop were dearer than you could buy in a standard Discount Retail store.

Me mam worked there early 70's, I still refer to it as the AEI and before that think it was the BTH... someone will know.
Christmas lights were very good up and till the power cuts in the 70's, never as good after that.
Our very first stereo unit came from the staff shop, thought it was great at the time.

As sorrel Malc said, it was known as 'the AEI' back in the day, and at Christmas, driving over there to pass slowly along Melton Road in front of the place was a real joy.

My dad began at BTH in the 30s, and went through at least AEI and Marconi during his 47 years – and probably other iterations too. His pension ended up as BAE.

My dad was a Production Engineer there. Said that the everlasting light bulb had been made but Thorn closed it down by buying out the patents.
i worked there as a student summer job on the glass lathes in the late 70s.

Elder sister lived in Stafford Street. Christmas night tradition to walk up there and see the lights.
A well known Street back in the day for Lambretta owners , Pete Oakleys Lambretta dealership on the corner with Melton Rd. Spent many happy hours and pounds in there....now a hairdressers or something like that.
