The thing I don’t really understand is why the two major parties both want to keep the place when it’s such a drain on resources

Why not? It protects their border, and makes everything much easier with the island of Ireland in EU and mainland britain out of the EU. Much easier to manage than the mess it is now, which still has no solution.
There are poor countries in the EU, they're not all Germany (who managed to absorb the DDR after unification).
If brexit was simply about economics nobody would've voted for it.
 
The EU have got enough basket case economies. The Irish times said that we pay more to subsidise the NI than our payments to the EU

Repatriate the British / Protestants? That won’t go down at all well and will cause I told carnage.

Invade Ireland? What, and make an enemy of them all as well as the EU?

Keep it as it is? Well that isn’t really working either is it?
