Labour MP Assaults a Constituent

Will the full force of the law come down on him? Clear assault

Punching a man who is on the ground ain't a good look and stuffs any claim of self defence

Over to you Keir............

Just had another look

Punches a man, who has his hands by his side, because he felt 'threatened'

Pops five cheap shot punches in while the man is on the ground and offering no threat at all.

Tells him 'you wont do that to an MP again will you'

Looking forward to the Police dragging this one out for a couple of years or maybe Cheshire Police with arrest the victim for putting his face in the way of Amesbury's hand

This is the problem of using your power to play with the law as you feel like it, with no regard for the long-term consequences.

The only solution here that will get the PM off the hook is to fast track his colleague straight into prison. (Which in itself, would be a dreadful use of the law.)

These people who want to cancel and ban and lock up, really haven't thought about it much, have they?

I'm not sure if he is still involved in the Community Safety Event - Resolve.

Sponsored by Mike Amesbury MP. You are cordially invited to the Parliamentary Launch of ASB Awareness Week 2024. Join us for the official launch of this year’s national Anti-Social Behaviour Awareness Week campaign, which is running from the 18th – 24th November. The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘Making Communities Safer

With Ricky Jones heading for chokey, they’re gonna run out of MP’s.

So what's the current state of play?
Mike Amesbury was suspended from the party over the weekend and has had the whip withdrawn after videos emerged of the altercation in Frodsham, in his constituency in Cheshire ... Keir Starmer called the video “shocking” and said the party had “moved very swiftly” to respond. He said: “There is now a police investigation and in the circumstances you’ll appreciate there’s not much more I can say about that.”

Labour sweeping it under the carpet as are the Police

No surprises there then

The Times reports it was a row over winter fuel cuts and the closing of a local bridge which led to Labour MP Mike Amesbury beating up a constituent at 2.25am in the street. So that’s the way Labour have decided to deal with dissent by voters. Incredible. And criminal.

Not sure how you draw that conclusion. I don't think the Labour Party have the power to do more (I suppose they could urge him to resign, and perhaps there are people doing just that behind the scenes), and it seems premature to suggest the police are sweeping it under the carpet.

That's funny, sort of, but you need a lightness of touch and speech to make it land as humour.

Labour could take action right now if they wanted. They have seen the video and can judge whether they want him in the Labour Party or not. They cannot force him to give up his seat but they can send out a clear message that his behaviour is unacceptable to them and that his actions make him unwelcome in the Labour Party.

If the Police decide to charge him makes no difference to his fitness to be a member.

Amesbury gave a statement to Police on Sunday. They have seen the evidence. There is no reason to delay prosecution. the CPS charged Ricky Jones within 72 hours but then he is not an MP

Starmer was more than happy to pass comment on cases before they were charged or went to Court - why not now?##

What do your think Starmer should do?

As I understand it he has lost the whip which means that he is not currently a Labour Party member. Not sure how much more unwelcome he can be.

I can't comment on police procedure but I don't think it is unusual for things to take a bit of time, I imagine that a lot of factors are taken into account (which isn't to say that they get it right every time). I certainly wouldn't be confident to assert that there is no reason to delay prosecution (I think the first step would be for the police to pass a file to the CPS who take the charging decision?). Based on what we know it would be pretty surprising if the police and CPS took no action. I don't know who Ricky Jones is without looking it up, sorry.

I'm afraid I don't know exactly what Starmer has said in previous cases (I assume you're referring to the disturbances following the murders in Southport?), but I would be surprised if he'd referred to any individual case as distinct from general comment on the violence (and I think he may have explicitly out a political label on it). He has called the video "shocking" which I think is hard to disagree with, but decline to comment further while the police investigate.

I don't think I'd expect him to do anything else at this stage. Did you have anything specifically in mind?

I've always found it odd that when a misbehaving MP has the whip removed they continue to be paid 90K a year for doing even less and it's regarded as a punishment.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if he ends up on the wrong end of a recall petition (and might resign to pre-empt that), in which case it is his constituents who exercise their prerogative of deciding who should (or should not) represent them in Parliament. I suppose it's not so different to people in a regular job being suspended while remaining on the payroll, although in the case of MPs I'm not sure they would necessarily be doing much less just because they have lost the whip (it would be interesting to see whether whip-less MPs continue to vote at the same rate as when they had the whip).
