Larry Gains

I know his son well, Only spoke to him a few days ago. I met him myself many years ago, when he came to speak to the pupils of Mayflower Junior school. Based himself mostly in Evington .....

I worked at a place in Oadby with a bloke called George, a local Oadby character and he told me he helped to put the ring up at Welford Road

In Gains' book he mentions Bert 'Tiger' Ison, although he gets his name wrong.

Tiger taught me how to play cribbage.

Right cantankerous old bastard he was.

From memories of when i was young on a building site ,when the conversation turned to boxing (which was quite often )the older ones always aknowledged Larry Gains as the best local boxer ,and that was against some pretty fierce opposition , in the NWL area round the very early 19,oos there were severaL coloured families such as the Millers who were well known boxers , I have told Mac this before ,but when i followed Leicester away in the early sixties ,we would go for for a drink either before or after the game and end up talking to the older locals who always wanted to talk about Tiger Ison. ,there is a complete record of professional boxers and thier records on here somewhere Mac.
