Men in suits

I’ve been watching some football on YouTube some before I started going in mid 70s and some after but always surprises me how many blokes wore suits at games , shirt and ties if not … I can’t remember them in my early days was it not a thing at Leicester? Maybe some of you lads can remember? Ps I think it’s great and may start doing it 🤭🦊🤔

I think it was far more common before leisure wear became available. I think blokes couldn't afford lots of clothes. Work clothes too dirty so change into your going out suit or jacket and trousers. As an aside I was about the last bloke in my office that wore a tie. Lots of nice comments from the women as they often despaired of the scruffy turn out of the young blokes.

Yeah that makes sense now 👍👔 good tip with the ladies too Sam 👍

Sports jacket, shirt and tie was casual wear in the 50s and 60s for my parents' generation. Went out of fashion for my generation in favour of more casual jackets, open neck shirts, etc. I used to wear corduroy jackets (no tie) at uni in the late 60s but don't think I had a formal jacket again until some 30 years later.

Depending on the time of the kickoff, back in the 50/60s some people were still working on Saturday morning and maybe would go straight to the game, A guy I worked with who used to have to do this said whilst he had to wear a suit and tie Monday to Friday, he was allowed to come into the office on a Saturday morning wearing a Sports Jacket and a pair of slacks!

I remember leaving Cemmels on wharf street and heading straight to the midweek matches in 1986

I remember Staff wearing his dark pinstripe suit, hat, and shirt 'n tie on many away terrace. He did stand out a bit from the swaiths of denim clad Leicester ruffians.

Worked at the mercury and had to go some Saturday 3pm games before getting off to do the Saturday night shift , weirdly it was my most happy shift , full on for the night no stopping and NOT having to talk to half my cliquey work colleagues, I know I’m odd but just a memory of better times there 4me . I handed my notice in G and did my last shift on a Christmas Eve evening, the manager at the Vic your friend kept the boozer open until the early hours for us, the clicks went home early-ish ie midnight and I was left with the good guys who told me they would’ve jacked it in ages ago the way I was treated by my team, a bottled moment made possible by the Vic Gaffer👍👍👍🍺 🍻 and then in the new year onto the best job I ever had. What did Cemmels do ?
