I understand why you might be sceptical given his relative lack of experience, but ‘nailed on relegation’? Really? What makes you so certain?

I mean I bow to your friend's superior knowledge, but 'beyond awful'? They came second in the league and showed clear improvement over the season, finishing with a 16-game unbeaten run. In their two games against the champions Feyenoord, they won one and drew one. They won the Dutch Cup and easily qualified from their Europa League group, coming two points behind Arsenal (and beating Arsenal at home). They went out of the Europa after a 3-2 aggregate loss against Sevilla, who went onto win the competition.

Is that really beyond awful?

That was my Dutch mates words. He’s a Feyernood ST holder. He’s said they easily had the best squad in the Eredivsie but by the Jan window they weren’t in the hunt for the title so sold Gakpo and Madueke.

So your friend is a fan of a rival club? That’s useful context. I originally thought he was a PSV fan. It’s true that PSV had an average start to the season and were off the pace by January, but they were brilliant in the second half of the season (16-game unbeaten run, winners of the cup).

I think that RvN is a risk and that it could go wrong, but I find it hard to see how an impartial observer would describe his year as PSV manager as beyond awful. If we do end up appointing him, I’m happy to hive him a chance.
 
We get anyone half decent and they feck off, or they are crap and we have to get rid and play them off. Way it has almost always been for us, way it will always be I am afraid. NFP and MON possible exceptions but even their tenures didn’t end happily for us.
 
Well, we signed Ulloa on the basis he did well against us (that said, i reckon i'd've been good for a hat-trick against our defence that night!), and that worked out ok. So maybe this'll follow suit...
