It is very rare to find an Italian restuarant in the UK, that comes even close to an average little cafe in Italy.

I agree. But you can sometimes find a restaurant that does...

OGGI up London Road just past the Marquis Wellington. Best Italian I've been to. Owned and run by the waiters who used to work at the San Carlo before it went downhill. Very old school atmosphere where you half expect Al Pacino to come out of the khasi with a shooter he has just found behind the water cistern.
Mind you the gaff in Albion St - Casa Romana - is very decent.
