Speedway

Such an underrated sport and I’m no petrolhead , my one yearly visit won’t do owt for them sadly but I always enjoy it , still ant been this season as yet .
 
Yes, but underrated? Completely ignored by the media. unlike any other sport.
For instance I got excited when news of the upcoming Final second leg was previewed on BBC Midlands
except it had already been ridden the night before.:rolleyes:
And the Mercury printed a letter it has already printed three nights previously. :rolleyes:
 
I sometimes still pass the derelict Coventry Bees Brandon Stadium. It has stood there rusting and unused for many years now while a Council/Owner/Development/Planning decision wrangle has been going on without any sign of a resolution.

World superbikes were on at Donington a few weeks ago, no mention on EMT, or 5 Live, bikes are totally ignored, never used to be
 
Remember my folks taking me to Blackbird Rd as a kid in the 60/70’s. Ray Wilson, Dave Jessop and some Swedish guy who I called Mechanic! Great nights. Tuesdays?
 
Rugby Borough Council turned down an application to use the Brandon site for housing and a football pitch in 2024. All previous plans have also failed too.
Apparently Mike Ashley is now part of a consortium group that wants to bring Speedway and Stock Cars back to the site. There is also an S.O.S (Save Our Speedway) focus group. Probably after nearly a decade without the noise and increased traffic that a resumption would create the inhabitants of Brandon and Wolston would be likely to raise objections.
 
A sport that appears to be still in the
Jurassic period been overtaken in the city
in popularity by basketball
A sport more in fashion now think

I went Brandon mid 70s British championship, Eric boocock won but I was a Peter Collins fan , bob valentine hit a steward I think , great noise and love the smell , I’d never been before it was fantastic .
 
I was "back home" for most of June and managed to get in 5 speedway meetings in that time! 2 at Beaumont Park and 1 away at Ipswich watching the Lions, plus 2 nights at Manchester for the FIM SGP.

Absolutely love the sport but really starved of it down here despite New Zealand's past pedigree of some top riders 😕

Aussie have some great riders though, so I took it you had teams and leagues …. It’s struggling here really but along with rugby league and county cricket I’d love to watch more on it.
 
I’ve never been. I have said I’d take my dad one time as he used to live it down Blackbird Road but keep forgetting about it.

When does the season begin and end?

Yes Pops, used to have regional teams in New Zealand, now they struggle to even fill the field for the National title!

Aussie has always had good riders, but now they are great riders, just look at the ones currently racing for the Lions 👍

The final straw as well is that Sky down here stopped showing the FIM SGP about 3 years ago, so further ammo that it's getting left behind by the media 🙄
