The late Graham Taylor on ‘sophisticated football’

Much maligned.
Irrespective of football, after listening to Paul McGrath talking about him, it's obvious that he was genuinely a decent person.
A thoroughly decent person but his brand of football was obsolete by the early 90s. After Bobby Robson had finally got us playing some semi-decent football in the 1990 World Cup, Taylor took over and immediately took us back 10 years. His England team was one of the worst I've ever seen - and it's up against some stiff competition for that title.

True.

Funny isn’t it, with VAR in 93, Koeman gets sent off, we get a penno and probably go on to USA 94.

Not saying Taylor’s brand of football would have done anything, albeit Jack Charlton’s Ireland did Ok with a similar quality, but his legacy would have been a lot different.

I agree that his style became ineffective in the early 90s. However, that wasn't due to the style being outdated. It was because everyone knew about it and how to play against it.

Now everybody is playing Council Pep football, the best possible response would be the sort of football Taylor advocated. Or at least a modernised version.

The first rule of competitive football is 'do what your opponent least wants you to'.

if VAR had been there the Rijkaard goal ruled offside would've also counted, so i beg to differ.

Lest we forget.
He failed to qualify us for the euros in 1992 and the world cup in 1994.
As Stokie says Carlton Palmer FFS and losing 2-0 to the yanks before they had any semblance of a decent side in a friendly to add insult to injury.
He was a good club manager but a shit england manager.

Not quite true. We did qualify for the Euros in '92 but stunk the place out and came bottom of the group. We then failed to qualify for USA in '94. Then when Taylor was sacked and Venables took over, we immediately looked like a decent side again. Taylor was horrendous for England.
