As a lad who was too slow thinking to get in 99% of teams I tried for I remember doing keepyuppy in front of my Shrewsbury town cousin in mid 70s my record was 5 šŸ¤šŸ˜„ SO who did you guys who could play the game get to play against for your pub team or the like when THEY had retired as a pro? just make me jealous cuz thatā€™s the best I can do . Ps cousin didnā€™t make it big,.

Played against Dion Dublins brother in Sunday league, and against Harry Panayiotou for Bentleys Roof 5-a-side with Macs lads at Lutterworth

Had Garry Taylor Fletcher stop and watch a game I played in, in Birstall, whilst he was walking his dog.

Think I can trump you all here..when I was an apprentice at AEI Lamp & Lighting on Melton Road at lunch breaks we played on a pitch opposite the factory and no less than Sep Smith who was employed as a labourer there came and joined us most lunch times. Amazingly he was still brilliant when he must have been in his mid sixties !

Played against Len Glover in a Kettering Sunday League game - he was playing for Harborough Red Cow (before his sojourn At Her Majesties Pleasure). He would have been in his late thirties.
I was in complete awe - a starstruck twenty something.
He stood in the middle and pinged the ball around - completely took the piss out of us rabble.
One of the biggest thrills in my footballing lifešŸ‘

Didnā€™t you need to turn on the floodlights as Taylor-Fletchers presence caused a total eclipse?

I think just about everyone playing football in Leicester will have played with or against one of Dion's brothers!

I played with/against three of them at some point - Dion was too young!

Another tenuous link is playing with/against Trev Oakes (Scott Oakes Dad) from Showaddywaddy.

Also Tommy Williams before he was picked up by City.

I remeber Damian Heskey.

Mate marked him too once.

Thatā€™s a cracking post mate

In my year of playing youth footy i only knew one person in all the leagues that signed pro, and he never made an appearance for his team and dropped back down to amateur level.
I played for Syston Jrs when Clive Bloomfield, Jimmy's son was in the team.
As a slightly older player my mate John an ex pro who played for Southend United before becoming a Software Engineer invited me to play in a pre season 40+ friendly against a team. At left back i was up against a right winger who looked about 60, i was 38 at the time and still pretty fit. The guy ran rings round me, never got near him. i thought he was just another good hispanic player as there's loads of them over here (where i still play) in the San Francisco bay area.
At the end the guy goes "you're not over 40 are you". "No i said", "i didn't think so, but good game" he replied.
My mate comes over and said "what did you think?" and i told him i was out of my depth.
"That was Rogerio, former Brazilian international. Good isn't he".
Looked it up when i got home. He played 3 times for his country in 1969/1970 but didn't make the 1970 WC squad.

Thinking back it was 1985, I was at the pinnacle of my footballing career when selected for the team at Butlins.
I was told years later the David Moyes was in the Cambridge side but if he was I wouldn't have heard of him.

Think he may well have been without googling it , must have been great to play the pros, being slow of mind I can never shout at our lads from the stands as know how hard it is to play , only laziness and wanting to be sold makes me mad of players , see Wesley fofana for details , enjoyed your reply.šŸ‘

Thatā€™s a memory and a half.

He was terrible ere wasnā€™t he. But he got to be a pro šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø
Scorer of the best own goal i witnessed in person at a city game. Went on to be a right arse of a manager at British Shoe Corp. on Sunningdale Road when i worked there, a real "there's us and there's the little people" type. I was told Malcolm Manley worked in the warehouse at the time although i never saw him.

i also punched Frank Mclintocks son in the face accidentally when my team played a pre season friendly against Enfield circa 1980/81. Frank came on the pitch and started yelling at me. i wish i'd had the smarts to say "you were a shit manager", but the ref told him off instead. that day we were special guests of Chelsea FC (no idea who they played) and i got to walk on the pitch before the game, which was in a fucking terrible state, and the Shed was a dump. It was a right shitehole back then, one of the big 6 my arse.

A couple of stories from my heady manager days...
Trev Oakes was in the team; at work one day I was told the new lad in metalworking was an ex pro. So i sidled up to him and asked
him who he played for, he said Aston Villa. Was he interested in playing on Sundays? Yep he said. Another triumph for scouting;
My keeper could not play one day and I mentioned it to a (younger than me) neighbour. I play keeper, he said. A rapid registration and he plays. The rest of the team demands he takes over. He does and my original lad is on the phone for an hour begging me to reconsider..

šŸ˜‚ two great posts there gnasher # your doin 2 for 1, and I love it . Iā€™ll read again later to adsorb it šŸ‘Œ

While at UCCardiff in the mid Ā“70Ā“s played against Ivor Allchurch MBE who during the game remained within the centre circle evading any & every challenge while searching for "the pass". Did not so much dominate the game , he was the game. A pleasure and an honour!

Yeah, Dion was in our team at school, even though he was 2 years younger.

Also played with Trev Oakes. Just constantly shouted ā€feet, feet!" at everyone but rarely controlled it when pinged into his feet. Also dyed his head so you couldn't see he was going bald.

Used to go clubbing with Scott.

The only opponent from my Hastings High school team days that I can remember eventually turning pro was goalkeeper Carl Jeyes. We must have been 13/14 at the time.
Alan Hoult was from Burbage and amongst the boys when we played ā€œjumpers for goalpostsā€ football at the local recreation ground. He was the youngest, smallest but the best player at that time. He never got a first team chance when he was pro at Leicester City despite scoring regularly for the reserves. Saw him warming up at Hull City when we played them in the FA Cup,at Boothferry Park, when he was a substitute but he never got on. A couple of weeks later he went on loan to Hull City.

On a slight tangent, Eddie is still drumming & his latest band "Project Blackbird" is worth a listen.
