Chris Garland RIP

My favorite ever Leicester game i attended.
Leicester v Wolves 1975. Won 3-2 with a Garland hat trick. Game swung back and forth, i think we went 1-0 up, then 2-1 down and back to win 3-2. Standing in the little area near the corner flag with the St johns ambulance folk, i had a perfect view of a Sammels inswinging corner headed in by Garland.

Wallington
whitworth, blockley, cross, rofe
birchenall, sammels, weller
garland, lee, worthington.

what a line-up, and what a fantastic player.

Fantastic player.

Yes. Remember being in the Kop when we won it right at the end. Everyone went ballistic. Didn’t we in fact score twice in the last 2-3 mins to win it

Lived next door to The Birch in Coalville, just round the corner from me when I was a kid. Used to pop round to them both regularly and get autographs for others at school. RIP to Mr Garland (as I used to call him).

Very sad to hear of this. We were 20th and struggling when Bloomfield signed him in 1974 at around the same time that Jeff Blockley arrived too. His 8 goals up to end of that season were instrumental in keeping us up by 3 pts in the end. He scored a hat trick against Sheffield United in the FA Cup the following season. He also broke Blockley’s nose in a fight on the training ground after he took exception to the rough treatment Blockley was giving the young apprentices. 4 transfer requests followed that and he eventually went back to his first club Bristol City.
RIP Chris

I thought we were 2-0 down, Willie Carr and John Richards

Fantastic attacking City side…

I know there are some on here who rate Steve Earle but signing Chris Garland to displace him was a major step up in quality. Great signing by Bloomfield.

Both he and Blockley were inspired signings and they rescued us in an earlier version of the “Great Escape”. Chris was great for us, and it’s a shame things worked out the way they did. It’s absolutely tragic that illness has taken him too soon. RIP.

It’s also a shame that, as of this writing, the Club has not acknowledged his passing. Both Bristol City and Chelsea have been quick to do so.

He was the most approachable out of all the players for autographs really friendly and always signed Best Wishes RIP

Reading a article about him - he had a very difficult time after he finished playing in lots of areas of his life.

That Wolves game was one of my first at Filbert Street. Memories of the day - some clear, others perhaps dimmed or enhanced by the passage of time, are so strong. Whilst seeing Frank Worthington started my love of City, this game and Chris Garland cemented it.

Yes he was, one late Saturday night back in the day met him coming out of that chip shop bottom of Belgrave Gate ..City fish fryers I think, he took the time to have a quick word with me and my star struck mates. RIP.

Same age as me. A great player for us, not just skilful but also wholehearted and good with the fans. How many of the current bunch fall into that category ?

If the club fail to recognise his contribution it would be a disgrace, but not a surprise given the current disconnect with its fans.

RIP Chris.

TBF the person responsible for writing pieces of this nature, ie the club historian, maybe on holiday. JH never usually misses the passing of any ex City player

That Wolves game a very happy memory.

What would we give to have 1975 Chris Garland in the squad for the 2023/24 season - he would score a shed load

Certainly hit the ground running when he joined us - hard to think of a player who had such an immediate impact

My dad died of Parkinsons and he never headed a ball in his life
Reading the LCFC tribute it says latterly he had suffered from Dementia (as well as Parkinsons) and had been living in a care home.
He was only 74!
I'm convinced his illnesses were related to heading the ball.
