These so called head injuries

I only watched the 2nd half but I reckon Southampton players went down with at least 3 possibly 4 head injuries. No way were any of them bad. But of course the protocol understandably is to stop the game. One tonight where McCarthy ‘punched’ his own player with Villa in a great position. Stopped the game immediately. Guy was looked at for a good two mins, taken off and immediately came back on miraculously recovered.
It’s plain cheating and appalling IMO. The first one to start this was Drogba. He worked it out pretty quickly.
So what to do? I reckon a minimum 5 min assessment on the touchline by a doctor would sort this out. Playing with 10 men would sort it. If there’s a real head injury they’d sub him immediately anyway. Win/win. Is it just me. I bloody hate cheats in sport

In Rugby, the game not the town, would they put a temporary sub on for an injury assessment? Perhaps they could do that. It would be wrong to penalise a team if there were genuine concerns about the player.

just cut out the cheating. The "ungentlemanly conduct" rule used to cover most of the cheating. If its a head injury stopage, they should go off for 3 minutes, that should stop this.

This is my point guys. Something has to be done. I personally like the idea of a 5 min break but bring on a sub. It’ll be something the manager won’t want. Add another min to the injury time for the sub. That’ll stop it.
It was appalling last night. It seemed almost every time a Southampton player went down he was holding his head
When you say the ungentlemanly rule Bnet what does that mean/cover.

I had my fill of head injuries in the seventies. One guy fell awkwardly onto his shoulder bag, and his leather hat didn’t so much as cushion the blow. Was in no fit state to weigh and bag up my order, which fucked up my entire night.

It's called unsporting behaviour these days and results in a caution. The appropriate section in the FA laws states:

"There are different circumstances when a player must be cautioned for unsporting behaviour including if a player:
  • attempts to deceive the referee e.g. by feigning injury or pretending to have been fouled (simulation)
  • changes places with the goalkeeper during play or without the referee’s permission (see Law 3)
  • commits in a reckless manner a direct free kick offence
  • handles the ball to interfere with or stop a promising attack
  • commits any other offence which interferes with or stops a promising attack except where the referee awards a penalty kick for an offence which was an attempt to play the ball
  • denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by an offence which was an attempt to play the ball and the referee awards a penalty kick
  • handles the ball in an attempt to score a goal (whether or not the attempt is successful) or in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent a goal
  • makes unauthorised marks on the field of play
  • plays the ball when leaving the field of play after being given permission to leave
  • shows a lack of respect for the game
  • initiates a deliberate trick for the ball to be passed (including from a free kick or goal kick) to the goalkeeper with the head, chest, knee etc. to circumvent the Law, whether or not the goalkeeper touches the ball with the hands; the goalkeeper is cautioned if responsible for initiating the deliberate trick
  • verbally distracts an opponent during play or at a restart"

That first point covers it except in most cases it is hard for a referee to know whether someone is feigning or not. Even being able to restart immediately doesn't necessarily mean the player didn't have an injury. As Elsie says, it would be hard punishing a team where there was a genuine concern & the Rugby example may not be a bad idea. Any games stopped as a result of something could include a VAR review (I know, I know but the game has stopped anyway) to identify the obvious examples of players going down holding their head when there has clearly been little or no impact (think Alexis Sanchez when assaulted by Fuch's throw in) the threat may be sufficient.

Thank you. You make excellent points there buz. I suppose this is why I’m so disappointed by the players actions. We all know that it’s fantastic that there’s these precautions in place to protect the players. Both Bert Trautmann and also Ray Wood sustained terrible head related injuries in the 56/57 cup finals which would never be allowed now by allowing them to carry on.
This last night was so bloody obvious and the ref knew it. Not once but several times. As I said earlier the worst was when the Southampton goalie ‘injured’ his own CH and stopped Villa in a dangerous position. That’s why 7 mins were added which seems the most that’s ever given unless there’s a bad injury to a player. It should have been at least 10. This as we know will just get worse and worse. The ref will NEVER book a player for a head injury simulation understandably.

The fact is that concussion can be accumulative and symptoms delayed, hence the protocols adopted by other sports but not yet in full by association footy. This does not of course excuse misuse of rules by players, if any... what is possibly happening is that players know a head injury involves an instant stoppage of play..
