When Vichai and Top took over we were in the Championship, and I recall them stating that top 5 in the Prem was the target. I laughed at that, yeah yeah I thought, no chance.
By our historic standards, they didn't pussy foot around. The money spent and the standard of players brought in were on a scale that I don't thing any of us have seen before.
Although the achievements surpassed the wildest expectations, I certainly think they created a very good top flight club. Totally and utterly worthy of its place. Admired throughout, a brilliantly run club which connected with both the fans and the community.
I was convinced we were here to stay. Not necessarily staying and competing with CL positions, but a club where the R word was a thing of the past.
Vichai's death left a massive whole in the club, but Top acknowledged that he wanted to continue his father's legacy, and for a while you couldn't notice the sad transition of power.
However it appears issues have arisen well before this summer's total paralysis in the transfer market. For two seasons running with CL beckoning, and almost impossible to throw away, the club failed to rubber stamp this gift by shunning the market. Ryan Bennett was the only addition in one of those failed attempts.
When you consider the pot of gold awaiting in the CL it was somewhat surprising they didn't push the boat out more to claim a fantastic achievement.
Fast forward to today and we seemed to have reached a stage where we don't have a pot to piss in. I have read posts such as Soho's and others who I initially thought were just posting for a reaction, and basically dismissed them as being drama queens. I actually think now though that those opinions are somewhat far nearer reality then I dared to fear.
Sunday's bewildering management in the Brentford game, raises serious questions about where we are.
It's concerning where we are going at the moment. I think with what we have we are capable of sneaking top half, I also think with certain circumstances we are also bottom 6 material.
We look hopelessly weak in central defence if Fofana isn't playing. Both Evans and Vardy are at the cliff edge of their top flight careers.
If Vardy can play a reasonable part this season, I'd hope it will be enough to see us comfortable.
The problem is with no new signings, you can't hide it from the fans. It's starting to look like the club are desperately trying to cling on to the last knockings of our greatest era.
It feels like more of our best assets are about to be prized away, and we don't have the scouting structure to bring us such gems as Kante, Mahrez, Fofana, Madders etc.
Soho says that nothing lasts forever with us.
I didn't believe that until recently, but whatever happens nobody can take away some incredible years, years in which we turned heads, shocked, entertained, pulled out a miracle and triumphed.
I just want it to carry on, and that's why I am often negative about us, it's simply the fear of returning to mediocrity, to being insignificant, to being just another club.
