Absolutely legend of English and world football.
And the one against Mexico when it seemed like England would never score in the tournament. I was there for that game.Scoring the goals in the 66 World Cup semi final RIP Sir Bobby
The only time I saw him was when my dad (Derby fan) took me to DCFC v MUFC Boxing Day 1970. 4-4 should have turned me to the dark side, but I’d already picked Leicester as my team after the ‘69 cup final. He was world class so glad I’ve seen him a few times at city RIP
What a career that man had. In his early days he was an explosive out and out striker. Then in his early twenties a left winger. Then from his mid twenties a false No. 9 spraying passes with pinpoint accuracy and bursting forward to score spectacular goals. Truly world class and the man the Germans most feared in the 66 final hence their decision to have Beckenbaur man mark him.
That's what he said in one of his autobiographies. Far be it from me to question the great man but I was always sceptical that Ramsey would ask him to do a marking job because perhaps the only thing he couldn't do was tackle. No matter because clearly Beckenbauer was man marking him and followed him everywhere so it didn't matter what Ramsey did or didn't say. What a wonderful summary. Brilliant.
Sadly in his greatest and most important game he was given the job of man marking Der Kaiser out of the game, something he’d never done. What he didn’t know was Franz was given the same job.
Within 10secs of the start they were next to each other and basically and sadly pretty much held hands for 120 mins.
