Bobby Charlton RIP

Such a wonderful wonderful player. Could strike the ball ( a hard one) with both feet and the last player survivor of the Munich air crash. I was lucky enough to see him on a few occasions including the EC Final at Wembley in 68. He was as charming off the pitch as he was dynamic on it

Just a great bloke.

Top player and an extremely humble man in general.

A big loss to the footballing community and beyond.

RIP

He was world class so glad I’ve seen him a few times at city RIP
The only time I saw him was when my dad (Derby fan) took me to DCFC v MUFC Boxing Day 1970. 4-4 should have turned me to the dark side, but I’d already picked Leicester as my team after the ‘69 cup final.

What a career that man had. In his early days he was an explosive out and out striker. Then in his early twenties a left winger. Then from his mid twenties a false No. 9 spraying passes with pinpoint accuracy and bursting forward to score spectacular goals. Truly world class and the man the Germans most feared in the 66 final hence their decision to have Beckenbaur man mark him.

What a wonderful summary. Brilliant.
Sadly in his greatest and most important game he was given the job of man marking Der Kaiser out of the game, something he’d never done. What he didn’t know was Franz was given the same job.
Within 10secs of the start they were next to each other and basically and sadly pretty much held hands for 120 mins.

Had the pleasure of meeting him in person ahead of Italia90, when a mate of mine arranged to interview him for a local radio station. He gave us so much time for the interview and then invited us to have a wander around Old Trafford, completely unaccompanied, and then to join him for his next appointment (a press conference for an upcoming TV programme). He was every bit of a gentleman that everyone says he was.

RIP Sir Bobby.

That's what he said in one of his autobiographies. Far be it from me to question the great man but I was always sceptical that Ramsey would ask him to do a marking job because perhaps the only thing he couldn't do was tackle. No matter because clearly Beckenbauer was man marking him and followed him everywhere so it didn't matter what Ramsey did or didn't say.

You’re completely correct. Franz was a defensive midfielder who probably became the first sweeper. What happened was he marked Bobby out of the game rather than the other way round

Genuinely great player and gentleman and I think he had a bit of a soft spot for Leicester. He was often generous about the team and he also said how much he liked playing at Filbert Street...RIP Bobby Charlton.

Man U v City 1971. Charlton was 34 at the time but still instrumental in all 3 of their goals.

Compared with the modern game City's line-up that day was astonishing. 3 central strikers - Brown, Birch (he had not yet dropped back to midfield) and Fern. 2 wingers - Weller and Glover - albeit operating from midfield, and one attacking midfielder- Sammels. Not a defensive midfielder in sight which is maybe why we conceded goals but were entertaining.

I was at that game incidentally.
