City history do you remember

This is the 70/71 squad which won promotion to D1. In the summer of 71 Jimmy Bloomfield took over as manager and signed Jon Sammels. I don't think Carlin played a game in 71/72 and was sold early. Kellard played a few until he was swapped with Birchenall in about Sept/Oct. Keith Weller was signed at about the same time. After an uncertain start to the season we were looking good for a cup run until we unexpectedly lost at home to Orient. David Nish and Ally Brown left at the end of the season to be replaced by Denis Rofe and Frank Worthington.

Charity Shield two yard worldie from Whitworth, the first time I was there to see us lift a trophy. Being taunted by gleeful Orient fans (for reasons I can’t remember, I ended up near the tunnel that day, for the only time at Filbert Street, and there were a bunch of them above us in the Main Stand, we were Wycombe awful that day). The transition from a midfield terrier pairing (that Millwall game the previous season being the classic memory) to the start of something silkier (Salukis?). Doing the double over Notts. Going head to head with the bigger clubs home and away (it was sweet to beat the Scousers twice at home that season). The post-season Anglo-Italian Cup featuring actual Italian clubs (I went to the Atalanta goalfest at home, missed the other home leg). It was the beginning of something special under Bloomfield, though how special I didn’t realise back then.
