Dean Smith progress report

Despite everything we can still get out of this. Results elsewhere meant yesterday was a must not lose game although a win was really what we needed. We now definitely need to win at Fulham.

Compared to what we were suffering, he’s been a breath of fresh air.
The re-emergence of JV, the promotion of CS, and having a goalkeeper, although just common sense changes could , hopefully save our bacon .

It was concerning to hear him talk about not being able to rely on our passing strengths and having to revert to counter-attacking in the Everton game. When counter-attacking is the game we should be playing, in addition to all-out attack. I'm really hoping he doesn't think tippy-tappy has a place in the remaining relegation dog-fight...

We're currently top of the mini group of five at the bottom and our fate is in our own hands. If Rodgers were still here, we'd probably still be on 25 points with a mountain to climb.

Smith is clearly a good man manager & has significantly improved the confidence of the team, which has enabled us to come from behind on three occasions to gain two draws and a win. We're a much tougher proposition than we were a few weeks ago. These are clear signs of progress.

Some of Smith's tactics/formations have puzzled me (I felt we played right into Everton's hands last night, for example) and I'm undecided on whether I'd want him to do the job full-time. However, we're clearly in a much better state than we were at the end under Rodgers. I'll take that.

5 pts is progress, but clearly, we couldn't beat either Leeds or Everton both of whom are rubbish which will cost us in the end.
