Pub History Project Leicester

Brauny

The optimistic pessimist

Probably been done before, but this is a great website for a bit of nostalgia and finding out about all those pubs that we frequented and have probably long gone.
I looked up the Woolcombers on Pasture Lane/ Lower Church Gate and it's the first time I've had a glimpse of the houses on Pasture Lane where my Great Grandfather lived in the 1890's.
Nowadays it's just industrial units and I have never found any photographs of it's older history.
There are interesting facts about the history of that pub and if you research any others you can find interesting snippets connected to the pub you are looking at.
Very interesting imo.

Cheers for this.
I went in the Cherry Tree a week or so ago, which feels like it shut down a few decades ago... :ROFLMAO:

The Cherry Tree.

Love the first bit about the militia in 1794.
Navvies need not apply 😁

The National Library of Scotland overlay maps are excellent to see old street layouts compared to now...

Thanks for posting this.
That street layout actually gives me perspective of where the Woolcombers pub was.
Initially I thought it was at the Sanvey gate end but was confused when it mentioned Raynes street. I now realise that the Woolcombers was at the opposite end, near the canal and where Pasture Lane nearly connects with Lower Church Gate .
I have done a lot of family history and to the point where I didn't think I could find anything else out.
Just shows you 😁👍

Often wondered why that huge apartment scheme opposite the Highcross, on Highcross Street was named the Wullcomb.
It is on the site of the former All Saint's Brewery and the Woolcomber's was one of their tied houses.
Could be a link, despite the spelling difference?
