Revisiting my youth

In the coming weeks I’m taking a trip back to my youth and seeing Deep Purple, Journey, Toto and Foreigner live.

Growing up, I always said that I would try to stay current musically. I have failed miserably. However, I’ve never seen any of these guys in the flesh so figured I’d catch them before they hang it up. Hope I’m not too disappointed.

Toto from last night. Steve Lukather the only original band member left. Opening night of their tour and they were pretty tight.

Ive come to the conclusion that music is based in time and place. I’m always disappointed seeing bands after their days are long gone. But that could be just me.

I understand the point you’re making and I know it can often be the case. I’m pretty sure when I see Deep Purple next weekend that Ian Gillan is not going to be able to replicate Made in Japan. But there are some that get better, or evolve, with age, and there are some that it’s worth seeing just because.

Funny, I did the exact opposite. I fell in love with a form of music long gone and never shook it. My attitude is, if you've never heard it before, it's new music. There's so much out there from the past, you'll never run out of things to listen to. If it's good, it'll stand up.
