RIP Motty

He was the first of the new breed of commentator after Ken Wolstenholme and David 1-0 Coleman. Famous for reciting incredible facts on the day and of course the sheepskin coat. Got his break by being there when Hereford beat Newcastle 2-1 in 1972.
Will be sorely missed

Motty and Brian Moore were the voices of my childhood.
Motty was football, my favourite ever commentator.

Davies, Moore and Johns were my favourites, I never liked Motty's style much, he perhaps never like me too much, either.

I met him a few times during MoN's reign and he loved coming to Filbert St...he said he was fed and watered with us better than anywhere else in the Premiership !

Barry Davies was always a better commentator as he put more emotion in it. Motty was a statto mk 1, but still streets ahead of david coleman, brian moore and hugh johns. Still sad a day that another voice of my youth has gone.
you could also argue his way of doing things paved the way for twats like martin tyler.
Less is more for tv commentary.

Am I the only one on here who didn't like him at all? I never heard Hugh Johns do a live match, but IMHO him, Barry Davies, Brian Moore, Gerald Sinstadt and most of the radio guys were miles ahead of Motson for me. I found his overall manner just as irritating as I find currently Ken Bruce (in a different sector at a different time).

Johns did the 1966 WC Final

While I also preferred Barry Davies and Brian Moore, you can’t argue that Motty is a legend and it’s very sad to see him passing at such a relatively young age. RIP.
