The Northridge Tavern frog Island.

Brauny

The optimistic pessimist
Did anyone drink there?
Back.in the 80's I was a young pool player that frequently played down the Frog Island and Sanveygate area.
Played against the Sanveygate Tavern, Forrester's and Old Robin Hood, and there was another one on Sanveygate which I can't remember.
I am not suggesting the Northridge Tavern was a pool venue but I pass it by regularly and I can't remember anything about it.
Just wondered when it closed and if anyone ever used it ?

Used to go in a fair bit 80s/90s. Was a decent boozer for years. Went downhill 20 years or so ago, revolving door of managers then the smoking ban & closed not long after.
Shame, with a bit of tlc it could be restored to something resembling it's former self, might even appeal to the incoming residents of the 'Waterside Housing' opposite.

The joiners opposite. Cumberland around the corner.

Yes, The Joiners.
Don't remember Cumberland.

I doubt anyone can remember but on Sanveygate/ Pasture Lane area there was a pub called the Woolcombers which I believe may have had an ex City player as landlord at some point.
A part of my family history was my ancestors living on Pasteur Lane in the 1890's.
They were courtyard properties that are now long gone after the 'slum' clearances in the 1930's.

Back in my youth, I decided to tick off every pub in central leicester. Only went in the Northbridge Tavern once and there was an Elvis impersonator on that night. Did a pub crawl around all the other pubs nearby. It's a shame that you could once have a decent night out around there. Don't think any of them remain open.

No they have all gone. The Forrester's briefly changed ownership and was called The Old Moses Cabin but whatever it was it didn't last long.
There is an old picture knocking around from about 1980 when they took down the Great Central Railway bridge on Northgate Street.
It caught my attention because of the terraced houses that used to sit right next to the railway. It must have made the teacups vibrate when those steam leviathan's trundled through.
It's very much a changing area, and it wasn't that many years ago that you could still see the Victorian influence. Many factories and chimneys, the old pubs and canal area.
Gradually it's changing with the housing development and more modern buildings.

I used to use the Northbridge Tavern fairly regularly late 80s/early 90s. Good pub with a decent outdoor drinking area.

Some of the away trips went from the Northbridge Tavern. Portsmouth away one time. There and the Empire. Always trying to swerve the police spotters early morning!

Robin Hood
Friar Tuck
Forresters
Northbridge Tavern
Van Damme
Cumberland
Sanvey Gate Tavern
Joiners Arms

Then into town

I worked in Bath Lane for years. There was a pub in the Swan Street area we used to use. I think it was called The Ship. Probably been closed thirty years! Sad that an area can lose so many pubs.
