This 'ere England rugby semi final

As ever England doing everything well that I hate about the union code. There were a couple of corking games in last weeks quarters but England in a kickfest in rainy conditions is not my cup of tea.

I’m loving it especially the longer this game goes on. This is v unexpected. In a Soho ‘bet scheme’ it’s like sticking the winter heating allowance on this match and winning enough for a months cruise in the owners suite

I have to say, I much prefer the way Rugby is refereed. The Ref treats the players like adults, call the captains by their first names, there is mutual respect, no disputing of the ref’s calls, he’s miked-up, he warns the players as the game is in motion, it’s a totally different dynamic.

On the way back from Swansea I listened to the commentary of Chelsea v Arseanal. At one point Chelsea had a corner and the commentator mentioned that the referee was talking to players telling them not to push, pull, hold etc. Pat Nevin, co commentating responded by saying that the ref should not get involved with the players in that way, but should allow the fouls to be committed and them award a penalty or free kick as appropriate.

Felt like Italia 90 to me. England basically crap through the whole tournament. Got to the semi final through a combination of a ridiculously easy draw and a load of good luck. Then played well in the semi and were pretty unlucky to lose to one of the best team in the world. Funny old game(s).

One or two of our players could learn from the kicking to touch

I like Pat Nevin but, on this occasion, I think he’s wrong.
