We get put in the Northern Sections for this tournament. I’ve watched them at Tranmere once previously. Also travelled to Grimsby (27 of us in the away section,less than the number of ball boys on duty), to Accrington (tannoy announcement thanked the 12 away fans for attending, as we could sit anywhere we liked) and 34 at Barrow in the away corner (my pilgrimage to revisit Holker Street the scene of the 1968 FA Cup tie). I visited the Laurel and Hardy Museum in Ulverston on the way as an added treat!

At the time of the Accrington game I went to Pep Guardiola had just suggested that English Football should copy the B-team system that they have back in his ‘beloved’ Spain. Where the big clubs enter their reserve sides in the lower leagues sometimes rising as high as the second tier. John Coleman, Accrington manager, was rightly scathing to the point of being apoplectic with his response to that nonsensical suggestion.
