European Super League

One can only hope that the wanky CL plans that seemed due to be signed-off tomorrow are ditched. That would be a good start to the fall-out from this.

Absolutely Filbo. I wouldn't give those clubs the drops off me snozzle.
All that bollox about going on historic performances is an insult to all other clubs and fans. Uefa should tell them to fuck off and if they don't like it then resign. It's time to stop them from holding football to ransom

Now the statement is out we will see how big uefas and EPL big boy pants really are.

This morning the line was that thesr clubs wouldn't be able to compete in any other competition, so now is the time for the EPL to - very quickly and very forcedly - thank them for their service and say goodbye.
Cos as soon as they go begging for a meeting I fear they'll roll over.

Boris has joined the condemnation. That probably makes it a cert to happen.

As everyone knows it’s greed first & foremost & right on its tail is fear.
Fear of us, a West Ham right now, a everton maybe, taking spots in the European competitions through being better than them at actual football.
Ac Milan for Christ sake have been going downhill for a good while now & there football can’t get them back to where they used to be, juventus are basically bankrupt are they not?
It’s a disgrace.

Irony of ironies on day this is announced. Juventus lose to Atalanta (the Italian equivalent of Leicester) and their CL qualification is now in doubt.

And don't get me started on Arsenal and Spuds.

Barcelona’s debt is €1bn, Real Madrid €900m. They have been carrying on recently as if they each had a global capitalist lizard owner. They’re stuffed without this.

Spurs and Arsenal have to have this, to make up for their inability to run their clubs effectively and win things

Liverpool and Man Utd have joined because they have owners who want to turn European football into a US franchise league

Juventus, Milan and Inter have to join because Serie A’s prime has long since passed, built as it was on privileged access to South American stars from Argentina and Uruguay, countries with strong Italian heritage, and the fact that they led Europe with the first pay per view live TV deal in the early 80s.

So mostly it’s a desperation move, and one which at present PSG, Bayern Munich and Dortmund don’t have the same need to make. Am surprised that Man City, and to a lesser extent Chelsea, have signed up. They are probably irked by the sanctions UEFA have exacted for their dodgy accounting and actions signing up academy players illegally.

One thing I don’t understand. If this is to be a midweek, evening event only, that’s fine for European TV rights, but very poor for either Asia or the US, surely the two strongest foreign markets. The timings just don’t work for midweek only. That’s what makes me think it’s really another negotiating tactic, or an act of panic

Apparently this whole thing is being underwritten by bank JP Morgan who will provide founding clubs with €3.5 billion to support their infrastructure investment plans and offset the impact of the Covid pandemic. The league will be owned by the 15 founding clubs, who will put in an initial €2m and potentially a further €8m.

If so, this will surely provide them with a grossly unfair advantage over all other clubs and must surely result in expulsion from the PL. But wait for it .......

Is this not the heavyweights throwing their weight around to get exactly what they want from UEFA and this new Champions League format? The timing of the announcement is spot on.

Call their bluff. Bin them off. UEFA and each football association involved needs to be strong.

€3.5bn for €2m. Nice odds.

Aside from the greed argument, it would just be so boring.

A few games in with a few defeats you would realise you have nothing to play for

Genuinely want this to happen, more than happy for the 6 of them to clear off and have their little WWE-esque franchise league and let the rest of us get on with it.

It's not as straightforward as that though, is it?
What do you think would happen to the value of TV rights for the PL around the world if the Chinese / Yanks / Southern Asians don't get to see the BCCs? And what would that then do to LCFC's ability to recruit and retain the likes of Little Wes and YT?
For once, this is a big news story that deserves the label...

This is obviously a maximum bid, to make UEFA come to the table again over the CL. Behind it, though, lies the NFL model of a closed shop, zero risk, and franchises that can accumulate value (and be used as collateral to raise cash for other things). They think that the old trick of a supermarket squeezing out all the indie retailers will work again (in some modified form of their closed shop). What they don’t get is that This Is Not America. We want competition, not meaningless ‘World’ Series and the Harlem Fucking Globetrotters.

If they want to have a Harlem Globetrotters exhibition league with Man U vs Ac Milan in Shanghai let them, there will be enough European football fans demand for TV rights. It's been said for years that bubble would burst, here it is, so be it, we adjust and get on with it.

You miss my point.
Fair enough.
But I'd be prepared for quite a large 'adjustment' if anything like these plans actually happen.

I think I get you're point, I'm just saying I don't think it'll be the big cash cow they envisage, especially as Germany's big 2 have given it the 2-fingered wave off. All round Europe the leagues have survived a century plus, they'll survive this, albeit with a degree of financial adjustment.
