A Little Puzzle

Below you can see the Football League results from October 24th 1970, from all four divisions.

We got an impressive 3-0 win at Hillsborough, with Ally Brown and David Nish (2) on the scoresheet.

But from all the other goalscorers mentioned, can you spot:

a) Five who played for Leicester.
b) One who managed Leicester.
c) Two who were born in Leicester (both quite famous names in the 1970s).
d) One who played cricket for Leicestershire.
e) One who signed for Leicester and even trained at Belvoir Drive before a failed medical scuppered the deal.

Toshack correct. Needham correct.

The Brierley who scored for Halifax that day I think was Keith Brierley - not sure of his birthplace. There's one more fairly well known player born in Leicester.

Some fascinating stuff there. Interesting that of the 22 clubs in Div 1 14 are still there in a 20 club Premier league.

Conversely most of those in Div 4 are still there or thereabouts or have gone out of the league altogether, so well done Bournemouth.

Truly a golden age with all games kicking off at 3 pm. I was at our game; with the exception of Clarke we had held onto our best players and were having a real go at getting back up at the first attempt. And it was great for me be going back to Hillsborough for the first time since the win in the Cup semi final the previous year. A lucky ground for us.

Amost there - just waiting for the other one born in Leicester.

Here's a thought - Toshack and Worthington as striking partners.

Our 3-0 win at Hillsborough thar day was one to forget for Peter Rodrigues. Wednesday had only signed him from Leicester a couple of weeks before, and here he was facing us. He gave away a penalty when he handled Willie Carlin's shot, but thought he could make up for it by telling keeper Peter Grummitt that Nish usually puts them to the keeper's right.

Grummitt dived that way but of course Nish put it in the opposite corner. The match report says Grummitt then gave Rodrigues 'an eloquent look'.

I've mentioned this game before, there was a pitch invasion that made the news, by Leicester fans. I was on the pitch, we went in their kop and went on to go in the Leicester end, then everyone decided to go back and have another go at their kop but the OB stopped it.

I saw David Nish in a bar on Queens road about 7 or 8 years ago and ask him if he remember that goal (the 40 yard shot). his reply was "of course l fucking do". The best goal l ever saw actually.

l actually still have the football special ticket to that station with the wooden platform up the road from the ground. (Waddesley Bridge ?). I remember the battle with brick throwing after the game and a copper directing traffic getting hit.
