Good start so far, being nicely set up for a good game. Going Sunday, worst day for weather forecast. Probably end up watching Smith bat all day if they play.
 
400 was the minimum that I wanted on a good wicket and fast outfield.

Cannot stand Smith but he is a very good batsman.

I would like to have seem them bat to the end.
For the sake of bowling about 4 overs tonight, I would have preferred another 30- 40 and the extra scoreboard pressure it creates.
Just thought the runs were coming easy and the Aussies were starting to look a little deflated
Time will tell if it was a good decision.
 
I’m there on Sunday too with my old school mates C_B_C. Totally Sod’s Law that after this recent glorious weather we look very likely to have a (very) interrupted day ☹️😡 ☔️

Whatever, drink shall be partaken! Would be nice to put a face to a fellow Roofer’s name if you fancy a small sherry 👍
 
I cannot understand why Ali as been picked not played international cricket for a few years surely there must be a younger spin bowler in England
 
Well that declaration ain't looking so clever now.
Imo the Aussies will get over 500, putting England under pressure.
Always felt England should have batted out their innings. Another 40-50 runs and the Aussies would still be 150 - 200 runs behind.
Get the feeling we are going to need some proper English weather ☔☔⛈️🌩️💧

Looks like we'll be getting it tomorrow. Set up nicely now, shame it won't be tomorrow. Where's those positivity pills?

Agree Brauny. If the Aussie openers had been out in the field for two days fair enough to put them in for the final 20 mins/ half hour, but for me Root given licence to attack would have been more advantageous.
Also need Foakes in the side and Bairstow to play as a genuine batsman.

Yeah, I think Stokes'wanted to make a statement but the Aussies are rarely mentally weak.
They didn't panic or crack and unless England get stuck into them tomorrow then I fear an uphill struggle

Absolutely, they were ticking at about 3 an over and played the long game which is what test match cricket is all about. England were swashbuckling and raced to 390 odd, but a day later the Aussies with their test match heads on are probably in a bit better position.
I do think England did alright and sort of proved they won't be fazed by the quality of the opposition bowling attack, but the Aussies are a tough nut.
England will have to be at the top of their game on a consistent basis to have a chance.

Not looking forward to today's play.
They are not world champions for no reason.
I was hoping for a 1st innings lead but there is no chance of that now.
 
Bairstow not good enough behind the stumps, the true test of a keeper is standing up to spin on a turning pitch, which this is slightly. The runs he scored have been wiped out (with maybe more to come) by those 2 schoolboy errors. Foakes is acknowledged as the best keeper we have so we must find a place for him, bairstow snatched at the snick which probably happened because he made the original error and tried too hard to make amends.

I agree, Bairstow merits a place on his batting, Foakes is our best wicket keeper and he is a good bat.
Not sure who we would exclude to accommodate Foakes

Personally I'd leave out one of the top three for him, but it may mean messing with the order a bit as l think he's at his most destructive at 5/6
I know Crawley got a few first knock but I'm not convinced, coming into this game Foakes' test average was on a par with his, but then I'm not sure about Pope either.
 
He did, but everything was in his favour. Benign track, clear blue skies, fancy I would have got 20 myself!. It's a good point though Daggers and apart from trying Pope at the top I haven't an answer, but you have to play your best glove man, missed chances are so costly.
 
Well the morning went to plan. I still think had we batted till close and declared overnight we could have a very useful 50 or more lead right now. I know why Stokes did it but Australia were on the ropes and we should have capitalised.

Agree. For the sake of only having 4 overs at them, the equation should have been in favour of batting through.
Very good test match so far though.
