Driving in Europe

Thinking about driving to Austria in the summer. Any good stop off recommendations for families in Belgium, Germany or Luxembourg?

If you’re going down the western side of Germany through Luxembourg may I suggest going through the lovely Swabian town of Schwäbisch Hall between Stuttgart and Nuremberg. It’s the twin town of Loughborough and I lived there in my late teenage years. A wonderful representation of a typical southern German town.

Can I say to everyone thinking of driving abroad, especially through different country's. Make sure you comply with all local laws and carry the correct documentation. For instance In Portugal you have to:
Have triangles in your car to deploy when you breakdown..
Carry yellow hi viz jackets for all persons in the car.
Carry ID on you to prove who you are.
Lots of counties have lower limit drink driving laws.
Have on the spot fines.
Have a good time.

Don’t know about Germany and Luxembourg, but we absolutely love Austria. Bad Ischl and Hallstatt deserve a mention. Drive up the Grossglockner and around the lakes near Zel um see.

if you go to Vienna, go to the Naschmarkt and nearby ‘Third Man’ museum, and ride on the Ferris wheel where Harry Lime did his famous ‘cuckoo clock’ speech

Went to Zell Am See last year, beautiful lakes & mountains, as picturesque as it can get. But, full of very rich middle easterners, takes away the 'Austrianess' of it all. The locals ain't that happy.

I went 2016, slightly out of the summer season and after the skiers had cleared off. Went to see Grodig play their last match in the Austrian top league before they were relegated. They only managed one season but it was like Uttoxeter Town playing in the premier league!
