King Charles Speaking German

When Queen Anne died childless and without an heir the line of succession passed on to her nearest Protestant blood relatives the House of Hanover.
George I couldn’t speak a word of English. George II spoke English and is still the most recent British Monarch to have been born outside Great Britain. He was also the last British King to lead an army into battle at Dettingen in 1743.
He died while taking a shit at the age of 77. George III was monarch when we lost the 13 American colonies and despite recurring bouts of madness lived to the ripe old age of 81. George IV built the Royal Pavillion in Brighton,re-modelled Windsor Castle and was the reigning Monarch when Napoleon was finally defeated for good at Waterloo. He was succeeded by his younger brother William IV who has since had a few pubs named after him!

As a Deutsch speaker I felt that his pronunciation wasn’t very good at all. Our German correspondent Swabianfox will give better feedback no doubt. He needed to give it more umphhh. German isn’t a la di dah language like Italian or French. My old German teacher would have given him a right rollicking.
To follow on from our history correspondent Herr Borebage, Edward Viii’s German was as good as his English probably learnt from his mother Queen Mary who too spoke fluent German.
Finally I felt King Charles missed a massive opportunity yesterday addressing the Bundestag. He could have asked the question as to when Soho would be getting compensation for his grannies greenhouse.

Despite being also King’s of Hanover neither George III or George IV ever visited Hanover.
I do have a great deal of sympathy for George II as only yesterday afternoon I too thought I was about to die on the shithouse until the “panic had passed”!

Queen Victoria was the last British Monarch of the House of Hanover. She was succeeded by Edward VII,of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha through his father Prince Albert, and he ruled for 9 years. He renounced his succession rights to the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Duke of Saxony in favour of his younger brother.
Victoria and Albert were first cousins which goes someway to explaining the prevalence of haemophilia in European Royal families in the latter half of the 19th century.
Edward VII was succeeded by his son George V who in 1917 renamed the Monarchy as the House of Windsor from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha due to anti-German public sentiment!

There was a King William IV pub situated in the Hollow,Earl Shilton, and known locally as the “King Bill”. Noted for it’s exuberant clientele and “warm welcome”!

In the Plantagenet era we had French speaking kings for something like 2-300 years.
Qui ?

There was also a King William IV in Countesthorpe which is now a tesco, which is convenient.

So he died on the throne so to speak. 😆
