Demis Rousoss?!?Gareth Southgate.
Forever.
and ever.. and ever.. and ever..
Why has he made the penalty takers look like fools it wasn't his fault they missed. Penalty takers were already decided. He's pissed off some players by making the penalty takers look fools and others like Kane getting no service and Grealish who it appears Man city want ,perhaps he'll ring Pep and put him straight "you know Pep you can only play him in injury time."
I know he said after the game he took the blame as he picked the takers, but when did he pick them? It can't have been pre match as you can't foresee who's still gonna be on the pitch, the choice of Sako, a guy who's never taken a penalty for his club, taking one, never mind the last , seems utterly bizarre. I've always thought Sterling had a poor record overall with penalties for Man City but he's taken one ( at least ) for England and scored it. I'm convinced someone bottled it at the last second and Sako stuck his hand up.Why has he made the penalty takers look like fools it wasn't his fault they missed. Penalty takers were already decided.
Well with bringing Sancho and Rashford that tells me penalty takers were already decided. Didn't Southgate say something about penalty takers in training.I know he said after the game he took the blame as he picked the takers, but when did he pick them? Okay fair comment Oadlad, though I'm sure no-one except those in the know we're amazed when Sako made the walk from the half way line. That is actually wrong Stag. Takers, and order are chosen before the match on the results of training results.
There are three elements to taking pens in such important games; the first is technical ability which really should be a given at that level and the more important element, which is handling the pressure.
And this is where GS possibly got it wrong as you say. The thing is, you can get the former right all the time on the training field but there is no way to recreate the stress/atmosphere element on the training field. I wonder if they consulted a specialist psycho.
Those best equipped mentally to handle it are those who have been there before, in other words mature players, not apprentices. Another consideration is that some takers have taken 120 minutes out of their legs again not replicable in training but likely to be less of an issue with older players.
By the way, Saka's effort was not bad, perhaps a tad high but the keeper got his direction spot on.... experience again...
