Never fails
Bar a revolution I’ve no idea, just give up I guess and hope there’s something left in the trough when we get to it.What can we do about it?. They all have their noses in the trough. The only ones that aren't are the ones who are too thick to cotton on to the scams.
(with a very few honorable exceptions)
Unions are democratic. The Labour Party was set up pretty much as a political wing of the unions. They go hand in hand (or at least they did) There is a massive difference between Unions or the leaders of the Unions who have been democratically elected by its hundreds of thousands of members influencing policy of the party that represents them to a rich individual donating to a political party to curry favour, protect their individual assets, receive a peerage or a government contract.Well opinions vary about the unions being democratic (Based on 5 years as a shop steward and lay delegate in the T&GWU) but I take your point. The question is how much influence do these people have (quite a bit otherwise they wouldn't do it) and how much can it be proven.
Do they do it to keep Labour out or keep the Tories in?
And it's in neither of the major parties interest to stop it

Go on Adamus. You’re one tiny step away from saying that Governments don’t matter. It’s the establishment Cabal that runs the show.i don't think the russians give two hoots about either of them being in power.
they simply want to keep open their money laundering route (see today's news for how much property they have purchased using offshore, undeclared, money sources - and then see the tory response that they will do something about it "as soon as parliamentary time allows"); and they want to keep disrupting western countries, which they are doing spectacularly.
Dicky In my experience the leadership elections are anything but democratic, at a local level where there is a show of hands and it's all open it seems to be OK. The political levy used to be an opt in option, now it's an opt out which needs renewing every year, it's strictly within the law but it's fucking sneakyUnions are democratic. You can do it
Most unions used to be a closed shop. Little story about the political levy. Many years ago when that bitch introduced it. A shop steward I knew really well, nice guy but an out and out Tory and Thatcher supporter was in a debate telling those that had elected him not to drop out from paying the levy. Very very vocal, I spoke to him afterwards because he was very much a Tory and he explained he reasons. Something and someone I’ve admired and took on board through life. He said regardless of who is in power you need a strong opposition to challenge back and hold those with the power to account. That way you will always get some balance.Dicky In my experience the leadership elections are anything but democratic, at a local level where there is a show of hands and it's all open it seems to be OK. In sure the CBI would be in favour of keeping them outIt's almost impossible to keep politics out of trade unions.
Yes but it shouldn't be their main focusIt's almost impossible to keep politics out of trade unions.
