Popular side

Bizarrely over 100’s of games I never once went in that area of the ground. Everywhere else but not there

I was bricking it when supporters who had climbed on the roof fell through the glas against Spuds around 62. The match where Greaves scored dead on half time and the ref chalked it off.

I never sat in the at Filbo apart from the white wall as a nipper but decided at the KP to sit first just by the players entrance
then in the West Stand three years in the directors box and back to the West Stand curtesy of Bobby Moore

I the 60's it was represent the school in the morning, rush home and wash mud of the knees, grab a sandwich, catch a Corperation bus into town from Humberstone. Then get to Filbo by around 12.30 and queue for the Popular Side ready for the gates to open at 1.30.
It was then a dash to get a seat on the wall behind the scoreboards.
An old ARP rattle in hand, full of wonder and anticipation, absolutely magical Saturdays!!

I had a season ticket there from 1990 onwards, until we were shifted to the "new" main stand to allow more room for the away fans.
When i was i youngster, i used to go in the pop side as well as it was the easiest for me to get into. This would have been in the mid '70's
I used to get a train from home into B'ham New Street, then a train to London Road, and walk down to Filbo. My mum had a right dicky fit when she eventually found out what i was doing. It didn't seem dangerous at the time, although i made sure i stayed away from any hooligan element. Happy days

For a reason I still don’t understand my Dad liked to start on the Popular side towards the Filbert Street end. So my first City experiences (aged 7 or 8 in the mid 60’s) were sitting on the wall with a load of other kids many times almost by the corner flag. Players taking corners would often say a few words (mostly friendly). Also have vivid memories of the ‘half time scoreboard’. A 1-1, B 1-0, C 0-2 etc. You had to look in the program to understand which was match A. Another age!

Yes I was there too and the ref blew whilst it was in the air goalbound.Imagine how long VAR would have taken to get that one wrong

I sat on popular side wall close to the corner flag in 68/69, I threw a half eaten apple in to the Leeds lot that had arrived early and were in the Kop. I got a right telling off from a copper, later the old bill had to sort out the punch up when the kop started filling up, great entertainment for us kids!

Anyone remember the old toilets on the pop side corner / gate? no roof and stunk to high heaven, loads of graffiti scratched on the wall including one about Forest being w*nkers, my mates told me what it meant but I was still a bit puzzled.....;)

Remember lots of banter with players particularly certain wingers Birch used to give his sixth penneth back as well !
I always thought the pop side had some proper odd people in there. Ended up in there a couple of times when tickets were sparse. Bit like the remedial class in school.

Didn't a large part of the Kop decamp to the Popular for a season or so - perhaps when the pens in the Kop were first introduced?
