Severe Crowd trouble at Tamworth

I was there dear reader. The first time I've ever been to game abandoned because of crowd trouble. It all kicked off in the second half when Tamuff scored their second goal. Boro fans started the aggro by throwing flares and plastic bottles at the group of about a hundred home fans nearest them but these were then returned in spades. The referee had to stop the match because the flares were obscuring the view of the pitch (as in the photo above) as the missile throwing exchange carried on for at least 15 minutes. There wasn't a member of the local constabulary in sight and the stewarding(half a dozen or so high viz jacketed Tamworth employees (apparently Boro's offer to provide additional stewarding was turned down by the home club)) trying to deal with the situation was woefully inadequate. At one point the Tamworth fans seemed to be fighting amongst themselves and one steward appeared to get a kicking that required medical attention. The ref had taken the teams off by this point. The OB eventually arrived but all after the event.

There's absolutely no excuse for the violence and anti-social behaviour but both clubs will need to answer(fines? points deductions?replay being closed doors?) as to why there wasn't a greater security (including Police) presence for a top of the table (Tamworth were top, Boro 3rd) local derby when there's been previous between the fans before. I also heard the suggestion that people there had been on the lash at the 'Ball Game' in Dodge City (that's Atherstone to you) - certainly there were quite a few rather hard looking, well-oiled gentlemen there that I'd never seen before at Boro games.

I can happily report I spoke to Cosbyfox who is alive and well and should have some interesting photography that ought to be of interest to the investigating authorities.

An interesting night of non-league 'football'. Tamworth FC will be pissed off - they were much the better team until the abandonment.

Er... Up The Boro!!!

Good report Kev, I heard that the well oiled gentlemen had indeed 'Travelled' from Dodge

So someone decided to play a local derby between two clubs 10 miles apart on Shrove Tuesday with Atherstone right in the middle. Not the brightest bit of organisation is it.

Their is a video on Twitter of a big battle outside a William Hill bookies in Atherstone at the end of the annual Shrove Tuesday melee, good old fashioned punch up (boots an all) with nobody able to move in any direction due to the volume of people, being egged on by the crowd as well…

Only time I was in Atherstone was mid 70s painting the outside of the council houses, can’t remember the name of the estate, bit rough but decent folks…

We all went down to Tamworth
On the River Tame shoreline
To take pictures for the Boro'
I didn't have much time
But Jimmy Ginnerly and his oppo
Looked at the carnage all around
As some mother with a flare gun
Burned The Lamb to the ground

Smoke in the bucket
A plastic cup in the sky
Smoke over Tamworth
Ur ur ur, ur ur ur ur, ur ur ur, ur ur o

Is that the Ball Game where local youths sit on their bedroom window ledges having a group wank?
The photo I saw of the Ball Game Athers put up on here a few years ago looked like a scene from a Bruegel painting.

I doubt any true Atherstonians would bother with the handbags between the plastic brummies and treacle town.
Did you go in the Tamworth Tap Kev?
