Smith and the penalty taker decision

What did he say?
Nacho is first choice

Madison is second

He was unlucky that Pickford stayed in the middle……”how many keepers do that”

I would add that it doesn’t seem as though there is a single decent penalty taker in the squad. Nacho’s kick last week was very poor, completely stoppable, but got lucky

Should be banned from ever taking another, forget the mind games and put your foot through it, he did the same thing in a penalty shoot out against Chelsea years ago

Maddison on x9 bookings now too....what are the odds on him copping another and being banned from the last couple of matches?

This sums it up from Pickford

A camera close-up of the goalkeeper's water bottle by the side of the pitch picked up a graphic attached to it showing Maddison tends to go down the middle with 60% of his efforts, and to 'stay centre'.

After feigning to go left and right, Pickford did just that - and managed to bat away Maddison's penalty which was struck as anticipated.

"I did my homework," Pickford told Sky Sports. "I called it this morning where I would go. He is a good player and he would've expected me to move, but I double-bluffed him and got one up on him.

"Madders needs to learn his lesson. Don't play poker.

For the first time Dean Smith fudged an answer. I don’t think he knew what was going on. If he was reading the room, he should have been bellowing ‘give it to Vardy’

If you go down the middle then smash the faackin granny out of it and hope the keeper doesn’t have a chance to react

It’s the morning after and I’m still fuming about this. Vardy has taken 34 penalties in his career and scored 28 of them. He’s looking sharp and scoring goals again. Why the fuck did they decide that Maddison would take it instead of him?
Totally - 3-1, half-time & we take the steam out of Everton. Instead...

Yeah I noticed that on Tielemans it said 100% to the keepers right

Smith seemed to imply that the penalty taker hierarchy was something he inherited (ie, it was decided when Rodgers was here and Vardy wasn't playing much) and he just didn't bother to change it even though Vardy is now our main striker again. He seemed puzzled by the question, as if he just hadn't given any thought to the possibility that Vardy should be on pens. Hopefully he'll actually give it some thought now.

He regards himself as THE on field leader.

Hes like the kid who owns the ball, hes taking penalties and free kicks and not passing because its his ball and he'll take it home if someone complains.
Vardy should be the on the field leader.
