They done this with Grand Slam tennis tournaments.
They campaigned for parity with pay but the equality ended there. Men play best of 5 sets and women 3. So basically men have to work a lot harder to get the same money.
If you worked in an office where women got the same as you but went home at 2pm whilst you had to work till 5pm you wouldn't accept it.
Women's football is much improved, but in terms of appealing to the masses it's a million miles off the men's game.

Before they were banned just after the ww1 they were sometimes getting up to 40,000 per game
