arguably omicron is a 'regular' winter virus, and i agree that we will learn to live with it and be better prepared for it.

but also arguably the earlier variants were anything but 'regular'. they were new, without any effective treatments or strategies (i'm talking 2020, before vaccines, before ivermectin, whilst ventilators were being used etc). if those variants had been allowed to run wild, like other 'regular' winter viruses then the increased death rate would have been unimaginable IMO. (i know you don't trust the figures, with your double flu season narrative, so we will have to agree to disagree on this point, rather than replay the argument).
Fair enough.

Worth pointing out that there are and have never been any effective treatments for influenza, it has been kept under control by the vaccine, and better health care in general, for the elderly. Decent antibiotics for the pneumonia stage helped too.

There was a huge spike in influenza related deaths at the beginning of 2018 but it was dealt with quite differently with the authorities playing down any notion of an epidemic. It appears that the numbers were minimised to justify this response with many such deaths classed as pneumonia.

It all comes down to the 'what if'. Had we treated covid in the same way, would we have had 'unimaginable deaths' or would we not? We will never know.
